About Company:

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), (“HKUST(GZ)”), was officially approved by the Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China to enter the preparatory status in September 2019. Located in Nansha, Guangzhou, the campus covers 1.13 square kilometers and the first phase of construction is expected to be completed by September 2022. At steady state, the number of undergraduate and postgraduate students will reach a total of 10,000. Under the “Unified HKUST, Complementary Campuses” framework, the intended areas of focus in HKUST(GZ) will be thematic and cross-disciplinary in nature, synergistic with HKUST, a world-renowned international research university with innovation in her DNA. There will be four Academic Hubs (equivalent to schools) with 16 Thrust Areas (equivalent to departments).


Job Profile:

Job Title: Senior Technical Officer
Department: BioCRF, HKUST(GZ)

The Biosciences Central Research Facility provides cutting-edge technologies in a broad range of biological research. We are currently looking for an experienced technical officer to manage the flow cytometry, microscopy, and histology cores. Our platforms currently include flow cell based and stream-in-air based flow cytometers, high-speed confocal microscopes, high content screening microscopes, super-resolution microscope, laser dissection microscope, and high-performance histology suite. In addition to upholding existing standard protocols, the appointee is expected to adopt and drive new technological innovations in areas such as the high-throughput single-cell sorting technique, super-resolution imaging, and AI-based microscopy data analysis. He/she will also be expected to demonstrate abilities to coordinate research service or collaborative research projects with effective timeline management.

Responsibilities:

Duties
1. Oversee the day-to-day operation of the central facility to enhance the scientific research technology in the University;
2. Manage all team members on both managerial and technical matters by supervising and coaching;
3. Lead the implementation of new technology cores include strategical planning, investing the technology trends, applying funding, evaluating the effectiveness of different technology platforms, tendering, planning space, installation, etc;
4. Promote the University’s life science central facility to the guests and external users;
5. Nurture relationship with users in organizing various seminars, user group meetings, and workshops to introduce new technologies to users and hear their feedbacks;
6. Develop instrument operation SOP and conduct informative instrument training sessions for users and carry out routine maintenance with limited guidance from a supervisor. Maintain a high level of service in the facility with evidence of minimizing instrument downtime and ensuring every user is qualified as per SOP requirements;
7. Serve as departmental safety officer to ensure the adherence to safety practices per Health and Safety regulations;
8. Coach junior staffs, including instrument training and regular maintenance with evidence of providing guidance and ensuring the junior staff can serve independently in routine tasks;
9. Perform other tasks assigned by supervisor.


Qualifications:

Qualification Requirements
1. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree or higher in biological sciences or related disciplines with at least 10 years of relevant experience, including rich managerial and operational experience. Master's degree preferred;
2. Superb analytical and critical thinking skills, excellent organizational skills, and strong communication and presentation skills;
3. Experience in working in a life science core facility are strongly preferred;
4. Acquire depth and breadth of knowledge in all aspects pertaining to departmental role and effectively apply technical knowledge to solve a range of problems;
5. Make sure the practical needs of the team and team members are met and ensure that the team’s tasks are completed in accordance with the formulated plan;
6. Organize work according to project and time management principles and processes; practices and plans for contingencies to deal with unexpected events or setbacks;
7. Good command in written and spoken English and Chinese (Putonghua is preferred).


Benefit:

This is a Mainland appointment, and the appointee will be offered a contract by HKUST Mainland entity in accordance with the Mainland labor laws and regulations. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
