History
Wuhan Foreign Languages School (WFLS) was one of the first seven foreign language schools initiated in China by the then Premier, Zhou Enlai and Vice Premier, Chen Yi during the 1960s. It was founded as a specialty school to train foreign language speakers, with the mission to cope with the increasing national demand for bilingual workforce in such sectors as foreign affairs, international trade and diplomacy. WFLS has since transformed into a comprehensive secondary school, retaining the heritage of a strong curriculum in foreign languages and cultures. The school now operates under the philosophy of "foreign language specialty, equal emphases on arts and sciences, and international cooperation," and has been listed as a key secondary school in Hubei Province since 1982. It was only logical and natural that success as a school focused on international awareness and on forging international links should lead WFLS to fulfill its mission by establishing pathways to international higher education. This ambition was achieved in 2000 with the opening of Wuhan Britain-China School (WHBC) of Wuhan Foreign Languages School which has become an essential part of WFLS as the latter’s stepping stone to international higher education. The successful operation of WHBC is under continuing alliance of a number of experts and organizations in the field of overseas education, including the Department of Education of Wuhan, WFLS and a group of leading universities and educational providers from the UK and Australia, together with Oncourse: professional specialists in the field of educational services and management. It remains unique in middle-school education. It is the mainstay of WFLS’s policy of attracting strategic investors to ventures in educational co-operation. After more than ten successful years, during which a range of important skills were perfected in collaboration with WFLS, WHBC now has a strong relationship with Cambridge International Examinations and the Northern Consortium of the UK (NCUK). This has enabled WHBC to move towards the goal of becoming an international high school offering the best pathways to leading universities in the English-speaking world. We are again in a unique position in Hubei Province as the one international school, in the true sense, dedicated to achieving the highest standards in every aspect of teaching and learning for the benefit of students wanting a fully international approach to education at high school, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
A decade after its foundation, WHBC can look back upon an unbroken run of successes. Nearly two thousands students have gone on from WHBC to study overseas as undergraduates and postgraduates with 70% of our graduates were admitted to the world’s top 100 universities and 50% were admitted to the world’s top 50 universities such as University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, Rice University, UCLA, New York University–Abu Dhabi, University of Rochester, University of Melbourne, Australian National University, University of Toronto, McGill University, Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne, University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, etc. In 2013, WHBC was approved by the British Council as the very first IELTS Test Centre in a Chinese high school. Over 150 qualified expatriate and bilingual teaching staff and a dedicated professional team of school counselors and administrators are now contributing to our continuing development. With its strong record of achievement in teaching, counseling and administration and its reputation for impeccable academic integrity, WHBC now attracts students from all over China. The unique and fully integrated system of international, online and offline programmes at WHBC is why we are widely thought of as an elite school and a leader in the field of education.
Education Philosophy
At WHBC, we value knowledge very highly, but we value individuals even more highly. Our philosophy is simple: to play as significant a part as we are able to play in the development of all our students as they acquire the skills and discipline that will enable them to make the most of the talents that they have. To help all our students to plan wisely for the future, we offer a broad, balanced, comprehensive and liberal curriculum across all our programmes: an approach to education that on every programme is firmly focused on the needs and potential of the individual student while inviting, welcoming and facilitating the participation and co-operation of teachers, students, parents, partners and all other stakeholders, individual or institutional, so that WHBC can be a truly positive and productive force in the community it serves. We are fully committed to achieving these goals without sacrificing any of the academic rigour that underlies our teaching, our expectations and our methods of assessment.
