Hubei boasts 14 academic subjects ranking among world's top 10

217 subjects from 18 universities in Hubei have entered the global top 100 in the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2025, with 14 subjects ranking among the global top 10.

The list was released on Tuesday by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, which is an independent organization focuses on research in higher education and has published the Academic Ranking of World Universities since 2009.

Among all the entries from Hubei, Wuhan University leads with 44 subjects, closely followed by Huazhong University of Science and Technology with 42. Other universities with more than 10 subjects on the list include China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) with 26, Wuhan University of Technology with 23, Huazhong Agricultural University with 16, Wuhan University of Science and Technology with 12, and Huazhong Normal University with 12.

Looking at the specific subject rankings, Wuhan University's Remote Sensing Technology  claims the global top, marking the ninth consecutive year the university has held this position.

Other 13 subjects ranking among the global top 10 are Energy Science and Engineering (4th), Instrument Science (6th), Chemical Engineering (10th), and Nanoscience and Technology (10th) of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Earth Science (3rd), Remote Sensing Technology (3rd), Water Resources Engineering (10th), and Mining Engineering (10th) of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), Water Resources Engineering (3rd) and Library and Information Science (5th) of Wuhan University, Textile Science and Engineering (2nd) of Wuhan Textile University, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (5th) of Wuhan University of Technology, and Agriculture (10th) of Huazhong Agricultural University.

The 2025 GRAS edition evaluates over 3,000 universities worldwide, showcasing nearly 20,000 subject entries from more than 2,000 universities across 92 countries and regions. This year, two new subjects — Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Science and Engineering — were added, bringing the total to 57 subjects across five major fields: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. (en.hubei.gov.cn by Ruan Xinqi)
