Hangzhou

For many Chinese people, the blooming lotus is one of the most iconic signs of summer. From historic lakes and classical gardens to peaceful city parks and ancient canals, Hangzhou offers countless spots to enjoy lotus flowers in bloom. Whether you're looking for postcard-worthy views, a peaceful morning stroll, or a glimpse into the beauty of a Chinese summer, lotus season is one of the best times to explore Hangzhou.

This summer, discover some of Hangzhou’s most beautiful lotus-viewing spots!

Stop 1: Lotus Manor at Xianghu Lake

Lotus Manor is one of the most popular spots for viewing lotus flowers at Xianghu Lake. On sunny days, the lake is covered with lush green leaves and vibrant pink blooms. Viewed from the stone bridge, the layers of lotus leaves and flowers create one of Hangzhou’s most iconic summer scenes.

The lakeside Zhaoying Pavilion is also worth a stop. On clear days, its reflection shimmers on the calm water, framed by blooming lotus flowers. It’s a perfect spot to take photos and soak in the scenery.

Rainy days offer a completely different experience. Raindrops gather into crystal-clear beads on the lotus leaves. The entire lotus pond feels quieter and more atmospheric, capturing the unique charm of summer in Jiangnan.

Stop 2: Tongjian Lake

If you're looking to escape the crowds at West Lake, Tongjian Lake is a great alternative. In summer, the lake is blanketed with lotus leaves, while lotus flowers in a variety of colors bloom across the water, making it an ideal spot for a seasonal visit.

What makes Tongjian Lake special is its peaceful atmosphere. Stroll along the shoreline and enjoy the lotus flowers up close, without the crowds. With rolling green hills in the distance, clear waters nearby, and the occasional egret gliding overhead, the scenery feels calm, natural, and refreshingly unhurried.

Stop 3: Dongguan Lotus Pond, Xixi Wetland

No guide to lotus season in Hangzhou would be complete without Xixi Wetland. Compared with lotus ponds in urban parks, the lotus flowers here grow in a more natural setting, giving the landscape a distinctly wild and tranquil charm.

Dongguan Lotus Pond is one of the most popular spots for viewing lotus flowers in Xixi Wetland. Vast stretches of lotus flowers grow along the waterways, blending naturally into the wetland landscape. Visitors can explore the area by boat or enjoy a leisurely walk along the shore, taking in the blooming lotus flowers and the unique summer scenery of Xixi Wetland.

Tips

Lotus flowers usually bloom in the morning and close later in the day, so it's best to visit early for the best views. Don't forget to bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent, especially during the summer months!
