Chengdu Autonomous Buses Available for Free Bookings

Autonomous bus service

is now available

to all residents in Chengdu.

Passengers can book a bus via the “成都公交” (“Chengdu Public Transport”) mini program

and scan the generated QR code

for a free ride on a self-driving bus.

L4 Autonomous Driving

The small purple bus features an in-vehicle display that shows real-time route information, speed, and stop details. In what would normally be the driver’s seat, a safety officer monitors autonomous driving with little need for manual control. Unlike on conventional buses, passengers need to stay seated and keep their seat belts fastened throughout the ride for safety reasons. Each bus accommodates up to 14 passengers.

All autonomous buses are equipped with L4 autonomous driving technology. Through autonomous driving components, such as on-board sensors, decision-making modules, and control units, as well as a road-cloud coordination system, they are capable of autonomous starting and stopping and obstacle avoidance. This significantly enhances perception accuracy in challenging scenarios, ensuring smooth running even in complex road conditions.

Following the launch, autonomous buses are now open for public bookings. Previously, customized routes had already been introduced in industrial parks to meet the commuting needs of employees. In Chengdu Future Science and Technology City, where Alibaba Cloud, Biktech, and other enterprises are located, the customized routes allow passengers to enjoy seamless transfers between metro and autonomous buses.  From Futian TOD Stop straight to industrial parks, they have cut the commute from over 40 minutes to 25 minutes.

Booking Guide

· Open the mini program or app of Chengdu Public Transport and select “智驾公交” (“Smart Buses”);

· Agree to the Safety Notice for Smart Buses and pass the verification of user booking eligibility;

· Choose your route (with separate directions for inbound and outbound trips), boarding stop, and alighting stop. Then, tap “去约车” (“Book a Ride”);

· Select a time slot, enter the number of passengers and a contact number, agree to relevant terms, and confirm your booking;

· Prior to departure, the system will generate a QR code for the ride, which can be viewed in your order history.

Passenger Safety Notice

· Keep your seat belt fastened during the ride: Please fasten your seat belt upon boarding and ensure that the belt remains securely fastened throughout the journey. Please do not stand or move around while the bus is in motion.

· Take good care of public property: Please do not touch any autonomous driving devices on the bus.
