The Motive and the Cue recreates the legendary behind-the-scenes of the 1964 Broadway revival of Hamlet. Renowned classical theater director Sir John Gielgud was invited to direct Richard Burton, a popular film actor, in a new version of Hamlet. Burton, who was newly married to Hollywood star Elizabeth Taylor and known for his outspoken and unconventional personality. Soon, a disastrous argument erupted between Burton and Director Gielgud over how to interpret Hamlet. When rehearsals came to a standstill, two generations of theater people needed to listen to each other, find a compromise, and ultimately create an unrepeatable classic masterpiece.
