The city of Chengdu has significantly boosted its ranking among cities in the world in recent years, claiming the 58th place, up 13 places over the last rankings, in the GaWC World Cities Rankings recently released by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Research Network.
As a top think tank in the world, GaWC has released the world cities rankings at irregular intervals since 2000, which is eyed as the most reputed rankings on top-tier cities in the world.
The list divides cities across the world into four levels — alpha, beta, gamma and sufficiency (the first-tier, second-tier, third-tier and fourth-tier) — based on the status and involvement of the individual cities in global economy.
Three cities in China, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai, are among the eight cities on Alpha+ (most competitive first-tier cities) in the latest rankings, which listed Guangzhou on Alpha (first-tier cities), Taipei and Shenzhen on Alpha- (less competitive first-tier cities), and Chengdu, Tianjin and Hangzhou on Beta+ (most competitive second-tier cities).
