Xiamen urban design week concludes

Xiamen Urban Design Week 2 025, a seven-day event held in Xiamen, Southeast China's Fujian Province, concluded on December 8th. This urban design exchange activity served as a city-wide cultural and aesthetic feast, encouraging public participation and engagement throughout the year.

01 The ye ar's event feature d prominent experts such as Chang Qing, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ma Yansong, founder of MAD Architects, and Zhang Ming, chief architect of Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd. These industry leaders engaged in deep discussions on topics ranging from urban symbiosis and urban renewal to pathway exploration and aesthetic innovation.

During the week, the 13th Jin Jingchang Youth Planners' Innovation Forum was held in Xiamen for the first time, with previous editions of the forum taking place in Tongji University in Shanghai. It brought together top experts, scholars, and young talents specialized in planning nationwide to explore innovative directions and practice pathways in urban and rural planning.

02 This year's urban design week made groundbreaking attempts by using Tongwen Grottoes as the main venue and connecting six urban areas — Haibin Park-Niutou Hill Area, Demonstration Section of Island Ring Boulevard , Gaoqishe Area, Zhongshan Road, Jimei School Village and Tong ' an Ancient City — as stages for practice. The event emphasized transforming design concepts into reality through competitions throughout the year involving top domestic and international design teams.

The design week also attempted to break down professional barriers and make design more accessible to the public. The Xiamen Gaoqi Ocean Culture Fashion & Art Season was launched as a key supporting activity, featuring 19 public art installations inspired by marine culture, regional memory and urban symbiosis, and combining art appreciation, spatial exploration and community tours. This allows visitors to experience how art empowers neighborhoods as they stroll through.

The "Public Art in the Metro" initiative transformed metro stations like Hubin East Road, Cruise Center and Caitang into open art galleries, showcasing 23 outstanding works by local designers and artists to captivate passersby.
