Starting January 15, 2026, China Railway Express has expanded the pilot program for its “Travel Light” service to include 92 new railway stations in Harbin, Changchun, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Xi’an, Nanchang, Nanning, Urumqi, Lhasa, and other cities. With this addition, the service was expanded to a total of 111 eligible stations, covering almost all provincial capitals, municipalities directly under the central government, and cities specifically designated in the state plan. It eases the burden of carrying heavy luggage and significantly facilitates travel by train for passengers. In Chengdu, the service is available at three stations—Chengdudong, Chengduxi, and Chengdunan Railway Stations.
The expansion of the pilot program maintains all existing features of the “Travel Light” service, including its booking process, handling procedures, service offerings, and pricing. Passengers who have purchased train tickets can book the service via the Railway 12306 app, the WeChat Mini Program of Railway 12306, or the WeChat Mini Program of China Railway Express.
Two Service Options
Passengers who are in the same city as an eligible station and within its 35-kilometer radius can choose from the following service options based on their needs.
1. “Door-to-station” luggage delivery for departing passengers
The option covers luggage delivery from the passenger’s departure point to the railway station. The passenger can book delivery between 48 hours and 4 hours prior to the train’s departure. Staff will collect luggage that meets delivery regulations from the passenger’s specified location and transport it to the departure station. After passing the security check, the luggage will either be placed in a locker 30 minutes before departure or delivered to the train platform 10 minutes before the train leaves, according to the passenger’s preference.
2. “Station-to-door” luggage delivery for arriving passengers
The option covers luggage delivery from the railway station to the passenger’s destination. The passenger can book delivery between 24 hours and 1 hour prior to the train’s arrival. Staff will deliver the luggage to the specified address within 5 hours of pickup.
Pricing
During the pilot phase, the “Travel Light” service is charged per item. The rates are RMB 68 per item from the departure point to the station or from the station to the destination, and RMB 98 per item from the departure point to the train platform or from the platform to the destination. Following the pilot phase, pricing may be adjusted in the future based on market demand, operating costs, and other factors. For business-class passengers, luggage can be delivered to the business-class lounge at six designated stations at a price of RMB 98 per item—Beijingxi, Beijingnan, Guangzhounan, Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao, and Hangzhoudong Railway Stations.
Luggage Restrictions
Luggage for the “Travel Light” service must comply with the Regulations of China State Railway Group on Railway Passenger Transport regarding weight and dimensions. Specifically, luggage must not exceed 10 kg for a child passenger, 35 kg for a diplomat, and 20 kg for each of the other passengers; the sum of the length, width, and height of a single item must not exceed 160 cm for passengers on conventional trains and 130 cm for those on electric multiple unit (EMU) trains. Additionally, all items must meet the relevant requirements outlined in the Catalog of Prohibited and Restricted Carry‑on and Checked Items for Railway Passengers jointly released by the National Railway Administration and the Ministry of Public Security of China.
