Chengdu’s Ancient Towns Offer Watery Summer Escape

Jul 25, 2026

Chengdu

As the recent heat has been relentless,

it is time to find a refreshing escape this weekend.

These ancient towns around Chengdu,

with gently flowing streams and shade from old trees,

offer cool waters to wade into.

Luodai Ancient Town

The 26th Hakka Water Dragon Festival is now underway at Luodai Ancient Town. Water dragons dance joyfully through the crowds, sending splashes of water in every direction. The ancient streets themselves have been turned into a natural water playground.

A range of free perks is available, including free banquets, free access to Jinlong Great Wall, free jungle adventure activities, and free traditional flower hairpin experiences. Every weekend during the festival, lucky visitors will have the chance to participate for free. (Specific quotas and distribution methods are subject to on-site announcements.)

Dates: July 18 to August 23, 2026 (In case of unfavorable weather, activities may be adjusted or canceled. Please refer to on-site announcements.)

Huanglongxi Ancient Town

Winding lanes and ancient Chinese banyan trees that block out the sun define the town, where a stream runs through the area. Stretching over 500 meters from Longtan Square to Zhenlong Street and then to the Longwei water area, the stream is only ankle-deep.

After enjoying the water, visitors can relax at a local teahouse with a cup of gaiwan tea (tea served in a lidded bowl). The gentle sound of flowing water blends with the chirping of cicadas, creating the perfect atmosphere for a leisurely summer day.

Best water play areas: Longtan Square, Zhenlong Street, and Longwei

Wufengxi Ancient Town

The main water play area in the ancient town is Liuxi Huajian, where visitors can freely wade and splash in the stream. The flowing water is clean and refreshing, and the dense shade along both banks offers perfect protection from the sun.

Main water play area: Liuxi Huajian

Opening hours: 09:00-19:00 from Monday to Thursday; 09:00-20:00 from Saturday to Sunday (Water release is suspended on Fridays for maintenance.)

Jiezi Ancient Town

The clear waters of the Weijiang River shimmer in the sunlight, reflecting the willow trees and historic buildings along its banks. At Weijiang River Shallows, visitors can enjoy free water activities such as wading and catching fish. A boat ride starting from below Ruilong Bridge offers another way to take in the beauty of the river.

Water play areas: Weijiang River Shallows and below Ruilong Bridge

Pingle Ancient Town

With the Baimo River flowing through the ancient town, the riverside is the town’s liveliest area. Visitors can enjoy a cup of gaiwan tea by the river or take a bamboo raft ride along the water, admiring the reflections of western Sichuan stilt houses and the historic seven-arch Leshan Bridge.

Water Play Tips

1. It is advised to wear sandals or quick-drying clothes and bring a change of clothes.

2. Waterproof sunscreen, a sun hat, cooling arm sleeves, mosquito repellent spray, and other summer essentials are recommended.

3. Parents are advised to keep a close eye on their children. Please enjoy water activities responsibly and put safety first.

Note

Please choose officially managed and open scenic areas for outdoor activities. Please do not hike, explore streams, or engage in water activities in undeveloped, closed, or unwatched areas, such as mountain forests and valleys.
