TWINNING AGREEMENT SIGNED IN OCTOBER, 1991

Founded in 1903, Mexicali is situated on the Mexico–United States border. Mexicali covers an area of about 113.7 square kilometers with a population of about 775,000. Mexicali is the main producer of cotton and wheat for the country and enjoys high development in electronics, automobile, mechanics, electricity and tourism. Mexicali is also known for abundant geothermal resources coupled with the country’s biggest 600,000-kilowatt geothermal power plant.
Nanjing and Mexicali established sister-city relationship in October 1991. As a witness of the friendship, “Friendship Pavilion”, designed by Nanjing architects and built by Mexicali workers, was completed in February 1995 and has been placed in the Friendship Square near Mexico-US border thereafter. The pavilion is of architectural style typical of gardens in southern China and its twin structure embodies the meaning of “sisters”. On the rooftop and ground of the pavilion are painted with patterns of plum blossom, the city flower of Nanjing, and cotton, the city flower of Mexicali.There have been mutual visits between the two cities since 1991. Nanjing sent a folk music troupe to perform in Mexicali in November 2009, which was warmly welcomed by the local community.
