GZ grows mixed traffic lane trial for motor & non-motor vehicles

Mar 14, 2025

Guangzhou

Since February, Guangzhou has introduced a new traffic initiative, trialing mixed lanes for motor vehicles and non-motorized traffic in several areas to alleviate the impact of electric bikes on other vehicle lanes. The city's traffic police have recently expanded the program to include more mixed-use lanes in Haizhu, Tianhe, Baiyun, and Liwan districts.

The rightmost lane on selected streets will be designated for shared use by motor vehicles, electric bicycles, and buses to optimize traffic flow and improve safety for all road users. The width of the mixed-use lane will range from 4.5 to 5 meters, approximately 1.5 times the width of a typical motor vehicle lane, although it will not accommodate two motor vehicles side by side.

New key roads where the trial will take place include:

Jiangnan Avenue North, Haizhu District: Both directions, from Xiaogang Road to Nanhua East Road
Xinghua Road, Tianhe District: East to west, from Shatai Road to Guangzhou Avenue
Sanyuanli Avenue, Baiyun District: South to north, from Yuanjing Road to Gangbei Road
Xiwang Road, Liwan District: West to east, from Zengbu River to Xiwang Heng Road
Hedong Road, Liwan District: East to west, from Chongwen Fourth Road to Huadi Avenue Central

The plan also includes installing relevant barriers to enhance safety in these shared lanes. The public is advised to follow the traffic signs and lane markings on these roads.
