On the evening of April 15, the Shekou Management and Service Center for Expats (Shekou MSCE) hosted a bamboo weaving event at Somerset Wanxia Shenzhen, attracting over 20 foreign residents. Under the guidance of instructors, participants immersed themselves in the intricate art of bamboo weaving, exploring traditional crisscross techniques to experience the ingenuity of this centuries-old craft and the unique charm of Chinese culture.
The event began with an engaging presentation by the instructor, who unveiled the mysteries of bamboo weaving through vivid explanations and visuals. As a heritage skill passed down for millennia in China, bamboo weaving seamlessly merges practicality and artistry—from everyday utensils to exquisite decorative pieces. The instructor elaborated on categories such as fine and coarse bamboo strip weaving, while detailing the meticulous production process, from bamboo selection to final product, showcasing the wisdom of generations of craftsmen.
After the knowledge - sharing session, the fun hands - on session began. Foreign residents held bamboo strips and tools, eagerly trying to make bamboo - woven wind chimes. Although they encountered problems like split bamboo strips and unfamiliar techniques, they helped each other, and the venue was filled with laughter.
Nikki from the U.S. shared enthusiastically, “I loved this bamboo weaving workshop! It was quite challenging—I almost gave up halfway—but I’m so proud I persevered and finished my own wind chime!”
Helen from Serbia added, “I’m grateful to Shekou MSCE for organizing this! My favorite part was choosing the colors: yellow for the sun and green for trees, symbolizing the union of sunlight and nature.”
This bamboo weaving event is part of Shekou MSCE’s ongoing “Shekou Expats’ Night School” series, designed to let expats engage directly with intangible cultural heritage through hands-on experiences. By bridging cross-cultural understanding, the initiative aims to foster a more inclusive international community in Shekou. Upcoming events will feature other heritage arts like seal carving, further deepening expats’ appreciation for China’s cultural legacy.
