TWINNING AGREEMENT SIGNED IN FEBRUARY, 1980
Florence is the capital city of central Italy’s Tuscany region, 230 kilometers from Rome, the capital of Italy. It is a significant political, economic and cultural center and a transportation hub. Covering an area of about 1042 square kilometers, the city has a population of around 500,000. Tourism is an important source of income for the city of Florence, which is also known as the “City of Flowers”. Since the Middle Ages, Florence has been one of the sources of cultural exchanges and development of Italy. It has nurtured numerous outstanding artists, writers and politicians. Nanjing and Florence established sister-city relationship in February of 1980. It is Nanjing’s first sister city in Europe.
Since the establishment of sister-city relationship, Nanjing has sent a series of delegations to Florence for friendly visits, lectures and business matchmakings. The scope of cooperation covers trade, medicine, art, agriculture, etc. In October 2014, Mayor Nardella of Florence visited Nanjing and held the “Florence-Nanjing Friendly Cooperation Matchmaking Conference on Economy, Trade and Investment”. In July 2015, Nanjing sent a delegation to Florence and co-hosted the “Celebrations of the 35th Anniversary of the Establishment of Nanjing-Florence Sister-City Relationship and the Friendly Cooperation Matchmaking Conference on Economy and Trade”. In 2017, the two cities jointly organized an ink and wash painting exhibition, namely “Nanjing-Florence • The Story of Two Cities”.
