Xiamen Medical College (XMMC)

Xiamen Medical College (XMMC) is a full-time public undergraduate college, one of the three medical undergraduate colleges in Fujian Province and the only of its type in Southwest Fujian. The origin of XMMC can be traced back to the Gulangyu Medical School established in 1898. The century-old college inherits the school motto culture of “Virtuous characters forge a distinguished man, and exquisite skills facilitate a successful career”, and carries forward the school spirit of  “Be postive, broad-minded, kind and grateful” and the academic atmosphere of “Be loyal, solid, pragmatic, creative”. Combining the socialist core values with the actual situation of medical colleges and universities, XMMC refines the medical and health talents cultivating concept of “Four Talents” , namely, “Be Loyal to the country, filial to their parents, responsible to their units, and dedicated to the patients” with its own characteristics. Rooting in Xiamen, targeting Fujian Province and illuminating the whole country, XMMC is committed to supplying high-quality applied medical and health talents for the medical and health industry. The employment rate of graduates has reached as high as about 98% for many years. XMMC invited Zhong Nanshan, the renowned respiratory disease expert and Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, to be the honorary director of its Institute of Respiratory Diseases and the honorary president of its Second Affiliated Hospital.

XMMC is located in Xiamen Special Economic Zone, a modern and international city praised as “a high-performance economy of innovation and entrepreneurship and a beautiful garden city of sound ecological conservation”, near the mountains and the sea, with advanced teaching and research facilities, complete public services and management systems, and remarkable achievements in the construction of ecological, smart and civilized campus. The campus covers a total area of 59 hectares (including the current 34.7 hectares and the planned 24.3 hectares), with a total construction area of 280,000 square meters. The total value of its teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is about 370 million yuan, and there are 713,000 books, and 648,000 kinds of electronic books in the library. The number of teachers and students in the school is up to 10,000.
XMMC has taken shape in its discipline and professional construction. At present, the college has 9 teaching institutions, namely, Department of Clinical Medicine, Department of Oral Medicine, Department of Nursing Science, Department of Pharmacy, Department of Medical Technology, Basic Medicine Department, General Education Department, School of Marxism and Department of Continuing Education, and three aided teaching institutions, namely, Library, Science Experiment Center and Modern Educational Technology Center. XMMC now has 15 undergraduate majors including clinical medicine, stomatology, nursing, pharmacy, Chinese pharmacy, biopharmaceuticals, psychiatry, rehabilitation therapy, marine pharmacy, medical laboratory technology, anesthesiology, preventive medicine, oral medicine technology, midwifery and cosmetic technology and Engineering, and 9 three-year technical majors including acupuncture and massage, rehabilitation therapy technology, oral medicine technology, nursing, midwifery, medical beauty technology, health management, health information management, and optometry technology. It has a complete discipline and professional system of medicine, nursing, medicine, and technology. Currently XMMC has a total enrollment of more than 8,617 students from all over the country. Since 2021, XMMC has jointly enrolled and cultivated postgraduates with Fujian Medical University and Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The faculty team has been fully enhanced. XMMC boasts 3119 teaching staff, administrative staff and medical staff, including staff of two affiliated hospitals under its direct supervision. Among its faculty, there are 419 full-time teachers, 131 with doctoral degree and 235 with Master Degree, accounting for 87.4% of the total number of full-time teachers, 81 with senior academic titles and 162 with deputy senior academic titles, accounting for 58% of the total number of full-time teachers. In addition, XMMC hires more than 1500 external teachers. 81 staff in XMMC have been respectively selected as provincial candidates for the Provincial Hundred Thousand Talents Project, selected by the Province to introduce high-level talents from Taiwan “Hundred Talents Program”, provincial high-level talents, winners of the Provincial May 1st Labor Medal, Provincial Teaching Teachers, Provincial Excellent Teachers, Provincial-level young teaching masters, provincial-level young teaching experts, provincial-level youth rookies, candidates for the provincial colleges and universities New Century Excellent Talents Support Program, provincial colleges and universities outstanding young scientific research talent training programs, municipal local leading talents, municipal top-notch talents, Municipal Taiwan Special Experts, Municipal Taiwan Special Talents, Municipal Outstanding Young Talents, Municipal Innovation and Entrepreneurial Talents, Municipal High-level Overseas Students, Municipal High-level Talents and other talents and honorary titles.
The education and teaching reform has been steadily advanced. XMMC has won a number of educational and teaching honors and achievements. At the national level, the achievements include 2 specialties and 3 training bases supported by the central finance, 1 National Health Service Demonstration Site, 1 National Pension Service Demonstration Site and 1 Teaching Achievement Award of National Health Vocational Education and Teaching Steering Committee, compling 6 national planning textbooks. At the provincial level, the achievements include 4 Teaching Achievement Awards, 2 Undergraduate Teaching Teams, 4 First-class Professional Construction Sites, 12 Project Construction Majors, 9 Experimental Teaching Centers, 34 First-class Courses, and 56 Education and Teaching Reform Projects. At the municipal level, the achievement includes 5 key construction specialties. Since 2018, its staff has won 2 second prizes in the 4th and 5th National Undergraduate College Young Teachers Teaching Competition, won the third prize and the second prize respectively in the 1st and 2nd National Undergraduate College Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition, won 2 special prizes, 1 first prize, 4 second prizes, and 2 third prizes in the Fujian Teaching Competition for Young Teachers in Undergraduate Colleges and Universities, won 2 first prizes, 4 second prizes, 1 third prize, and 3 special awards in the 1st and 2nd Fujian Teaching Innovation Contest for College Teachers, won the “Best Organization Award” five times.
The scientific research and innovation capabilities has been improved in an all-round way. XMMC currently has 1 national CMA-certified analysis and testing center and 9 provincial scientific research platforms. Since 2016, XMMC has undertaken 724 scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and 82 cooperative horizonal projects, won the Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, the Natural Science Outstanding Academic Paper Award, the Xiamen Science and Technology Progress Award, and the Medical Innovation Award, 241 intellectual property rights such as invention patents, published 1935 papers of natural sciences and social sciences.
The coordinated development of medicine and education has been further promoted. XMMC has established 2 test bases for the Nation Practical Skills Test of Medical Licensing Examination respectively in clinical and oral category. Except for 2 affiliated hospitals under its direct supervision, XMMC has 3 affiliated hospitals under its indirect supervision, 41 teaching hospitals and 91 off-campus training bases.
The quality of talent training has been steadily improved. Among the 2022 undergraduates, of which nearly 50% take part in the postgraduate entrance examination, the pass rate is 51.65%, and the admission rate is 31.39%, which is 7 percentage points higher than the national level. Those candidates have been admitted by 45 colleges and universities, including 18 double first-class universities such as Health Science Center  of Peking University, West China Medical Center of Sichuan University, Xiangya Xiangya School of Medicine of Central South University, and China Pharmaceutical University. Students actively participate in various national, provincial and cross-strait competitions, and in the past three years, they respectively won 34 national first prizes, 44 second prizes, 58 third prizes, and 8 excellence awards, won 19 provincial first prizes, 32 second prizes, 47 third prizes, and 10 excellence awards. Students majoring in Clinical Medicine have participated in the National Clinical Medicine (undergraduate) Level Test for three consecutive years, the pass rate of the theoretical part is over 90%, and the pass rate of the practical skills part is 100%, ranking the top 10% of the nation-wide undergraduate medical schools participating in the examination.
Exchanges and cooperation have been gradually expanded. Teaching and research work in XMMC is strongly supported by Peking University School of Stomatology and West China School of Medicine of Sichuan University. Currently, XMMC has signed cooperation agreements with Daejeon University and Gimcheon University in South Korea, Yangming University and Tzu Chi University of Science and Technology in Taiwan, and has carried out extensive cooperation in exchange of scholars, student exchanges, and scientific research with its partner schools.
Under the leadership of Fujian Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government, Xiamen Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, and the leadership of the college Party Committee, XMMC adheres to the leadership of party building, and strives to expand its size of more than 10,000 students by the end of the “14th Five-Year Plan”. By cooperating with the prestigious universities and institutions, XMMC aims to achieve corner overtaking and leap-forward development, and blaze a multi-disciplinary development path of “medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and medical technology”, and build a high-level applied medical undergraduate university with distinctive characteristics and regional top-notch features.
