Among the most important are three key documents: the Foreigner's Work Permit, the Shanghai Overseas Talent Residence Permit, and the Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card. PART 01
Foreigner's Work Permit

What is it?
The work permit is the official credential that authorizes expats to work in China. Under Chinese law, expats must obtain both a work permit and a work-type residence permit to be legally employed.
Who is it for?
The permit applies to foreign nationals but excludes Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan residents, and overseas Chinese.
How long is it valid?
  • Category A: Up to five years
  • Category B: Up to two years

Shanghai Overseas Talent Residence Permit

What is it?
The Shanghai Overseas Talent Residence Permit provides a wide range of benefits for expats and their family members who live and work in Shanghai.
Who is it for?
This permit is open to expats with at least a bachelor's degree or experts who are legally employed or running a business in Shanghai.
Spouses and children under 18, or those still in high school, can apply for dependent permits.
Holders of Category A work permits may also directly apply for this permit, with family members eligible as well.
How long is it valid?
The main permit's validity period is either 1–5 years or 10 years.

How long is it valid?
Usually 10 years.
