During the joyful New Year greetings session, international volunteers eagerly shared heartfelt wishes in Chinese. Even though some weren’t fluent, their sincere efforts won warm applause from the seniors. Abdul, a volunteer from Pakistan, expressed his deep affection for China, sharing how his initial curiosity turned into a love for the country as he settled in.
In the "gesture dance" session, the international volunteers brought lots of energy. They stood beside the seniors, patiently demonstrating each move, often using exaggerated expressions and gestures to keep everyone engaged. Wang Ayi, a participant, said, "This dance involves remembering steps, singing, and moving all at once. It’s so busy, and I’m even sweating a little—it’s good for my health! And the foreign volunteers are dancing along too, it's so much fun!"
During the paper-cutting session, the international volunteers were full of enthusiasm. Although unfamiliar with the art, they picked up the scissors and began learning with the patient guidance of local volunteers and seniors. Abdul, a volunteer from Pakistan, asked about the meanings behind the various lucky patterns, carefully cutting as he marvelled at the beauty of Chinese traditional art. He smiled and said, "I’ve only seen Chinese paper-cutting on TV before, but doing it myself is so much fun. I also learned about the wonderful meanings behind the designs."
During the New Year photo session, the international volunteers put in their best efforts. Rachel, a volunteer from Malaysia, used her unique sense of fashion to help the seniors choose outfits, match accessories, and create different styles. "Uncles and aunties, look here and smile!" With the click of the camera, their beautiful smiles were captured forever.
After the event, we interviewed some of the volunteers. Barsha, a volunteer from Nepal, said excitedly, "I’ve always been curious about Chinese culture. Coming to China and being a volunteer to celebrate the New Year with everyone makes me so happy. Through this experience, I not only got to enjoy the unique charm of the Chinese Spring Festival but also worked with other volunteers to bring warmth to the seniors in the nursing home. This is one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve had in China."
