How to use Shanghai Metro's 'open turnstile' system

Sep 09, 2025

Shanghai Metro has introduced an "open turnstile" system at many stations. ( Click here to see the stations piloting the system ) Unlike the usual gates that stay shut until you tap, these gates stay open by default. This allows entering and exiting to be faster and smoother, as long as you follow a few simple steps.

How it works

Tap your card or scan the QR code on your phone (Metro Daduhui app, Alipay, WeChat, etc.), or the QR code on your single-journey paper ticket.

If valid, the screen will display a green arrow — walk through directly.

If invalid, the flaps will close automatically. Step back, try again, or seek help.

Do & Don't

Do

Tap or scan before walking forward.

Wait until the person ahead has passed before tapping.

Watch the screen and only proceed when the green arrow appears.

Ask staff if you are unsure or need assistance.

Don't

Don't rush through without tapping.

Don't enter from the wrong direction (flaps will close).

Don't crowd too close to others in line.

Special notice for passengers with children

Children 1.3 meters tall or shorter should not use the open turnstile alone. Parents or guardians must accompany children. For safety, ask staff to direct you to the special assistance gate.

Q Can I use a single-journey paper ticket here?

A Yes. You can scan the QR code printed on your paper ticket at the open turnstile.

Q Can I use an overseas bank card directly?

A Yes. Starting June 28, 2025, Shanghai Metro supports bank card tap-to-pay at all stations.

This includes UnionPay chip cards, Visa (including international Visa cards and Visa-CUP dual-brand, dual-currency cards), Mastercard, American Express, and JCB contactless cards (excluding Type-B chips and cards without ODA functionality), as well as e-CNY hard wallets that meet the specifications of the People's Bank of China Digital Currency Research Institute.

Q What happens if my card or code doesn't work?

A The flaps will close. Step back, try again, or ask a staff member for help.

Q Can I check my balance at the gate?

A Yes. After tapping, the screen will display your remaining balance.

Q How do I know my card or code was accepted?

A Look for the green arrow on the screen.

Q What if a turnstile is out of service?

A The screen will show "Out of Service" and a "Do Not Enter" icon. Please use another turnstile or go to the service center for help.

Travel tip

During peak hours, please wait in line and avoid pushing. A little patience makes everyone's ride smoother and safer.
