Shanghai offers multilingual online map for international users

Jul 02, 2025

As the first of its kind in China, the platform is designed to provide more accessible and efficient navigation tools for international residents and inbound tourists.

Developed by the Shanghai Surveying and Mapping Institute and led by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, it is the city's only official online platform for public geographic information services — supporting data and applications for nearly 100 government agencies and enterprises.
The platform offers a wide range of practical features for public use. Users can browse maps and access detailed information on city roads, waterways, residential areas, buildings and public service facilities. They can also view historical imagery and place names from previous years.
The new multilingual service supports five languages: Chinese, English, French, Japanese and Korean.

While the base map is in English, themed content is available in all five languages. Topics include major attractions, transportation, parks and green spaces, shopping venues, theaters, hotels, government offices, hospitals, cruise terminals and sightseeing bus routes.
The map includes category-based multilingual browsing, querying and search functions. Users can explore themed locations through visual symbols, switch languages freely and search by category, name, or address. Results are shown in both list and map formats, with distances from the user's current location and optional navigation assistance.
