Shenzhen  2026.11.06

The city’s nights are getting brighter. But every fall and winter, long-distance travelers arrive at Shenzhen Bay. They navigate by the stars and Earth’s magnetic field — and excessive artificial light can lead them off course.

On the evening of Nov. 6, join us at Shenzhen Bay for “Lights Out for Migratory Birds,” a public-welfare event hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau and organized by Shenzhen Daily. Together, we’ll dim the city lights for a little while.
Why Shenzhen Bay?

Migratory birds travel south along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, with Shenzhen Bay and the Futian Mangrove Wetland among their important wintering and stopover sites. The Futian Mangrove Wetland is the world’s only natural wetland of international importance located in the heart of a major city. It connects with the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site in Hong Kong.
Nov. 6 also marks the day the agreement establishing the International Mangrove Center was signed in Shenzhen. Dimming the lights for migratory birds on this day is one way the city is answering a vital question: How can people and nature live in harmony?
