French progressive metal heavyweights Novelists return to China this March, bringing their latest album CODA and a sharper, more melodic evolution to the Guangzhou stage. Marking the band’s fifth studio release, and the first with vocalist Camille, CODA leans deeper into layered arrangements and soaring hooks without losing its technical bite. Camille’s dynamic vocal range, shifting from crystalline melodies to raw, forceful screams, adds a new dimension to the band’s sound, while Pierre and Flo’s intricate guitar work anchors the transformation. Joining them as special guests are rising French nu-metal newcomers TSS (The Sunday Sadness), whose gothic aesthetic and emotionally charged sound have quickly built an international following. After turning heads at major Chinese festivals last year, they return ready to push the intensity even further. Expect a tighter production, bigger sound, and a night built for the pit.

Some bands are formed by opportunity. Others by decades. When French harmonica player Laurent Maur met Belgian pianist Dominique Vantomme in Paris 25 years ago, the connection stayed — growing from collaboration into a shared musical language built on instinct rather than arrangement. With the later addition of bassist Werner Lauscher and drummer Domenico Verderame, the quartet reached its full voice: lyrical yet energetic, intimate yet powerful. Their music moves between composed structure and open conversation. Original works lead the program, occasionally reframing jazz standards into something personal. Melodies remain clear, harmonies rich, rhythm constantly breathing — shifting naturally from delicate moments into sudden bursts of intensity.

No band, no vocals; just wood, strings, and two players translating rhythm into motion. Dutch guitarist Eddie van der Meer and Danish guitarist Casper Esmann bring their collaborative project On the Road to Beijing, turning the acoustic guitar into a full arrangement instrument. Melody, bass lines and percussion live in the same hands, shifting constantly between precision and spontaneity. Known online for millions of listeners but experienced best in person, their performances rely on clarity: familiar themes, cinematic covers and original pieces unfolding through touch and timing.

After nearly twenty years together, French quintet OXYD sounds like a single organism thinking aloud. Built around synths, Rhodes, trumpet and tenor sax over a grounded rhythm section, the band moves freely between contemporary jazz, rock weight and cinematic atmosphere. Instead of solos and spotlight moments, their music unfolds collectively, tension carried across the ensemble rather than released by individuals. Their latest project Lapse imagines a world on the edge—inspired by science fiction and the slow anxieties of the present. Dark but not hopeless, the music holds collapse and renewal in the same space: dense passages give way to fragile calm, clarity appearing inside turbulence. This is jazz as narrative architecture.

Splendor of the al-Sabah Collection Exhibition brings centuries of cultural exchange along the Silk Road to life. Presented in collaboration with Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah, the exhibition showcases more than 200 rare artifacts drawn from one of the world’s most significant private collections. Located in the heart of the Arabian Gulf, Kuwait has long served as a crossroads between East and West, where desert caravan routes met maritime trade across the Indian Ocean. The artifacts on display reflect this intersection of civilizations, illustrating how cultures, beliefs, and artistic traditions traveled across regions. The exhibition includes stone sculptures, bronze objects, rhyton vessels, jewelry, daily utensils, and seals, spanning thousands of years, from the Bronze Age and Iron Age to the Hellenistic period and the Sassanian dynasty. Through these treasures, visitors can explore how artistic ideas moved across continents, connecting distant civilizations long before the modern era.

Chinese aesthetics has long been shaped by the philosophy of “Five Colors”—qing (blue-green), chi (red), huang (yellow), bai (white) and hei (black)—closely connected to the ancient cosmology of the Five Elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. These colors appear throughout classical Chinese art, design and daily life, forming a visual language that has evolved across centuries. Following the success of its earlier exhibition exploring the modern interpretation of traditional Chinese colors, Guangzhou Museum of Art now presents Five Colours in Various Manifestations – Twelve Months of Appreciating Colours. Drawn from the museum’s own collection, the exhibition brings together a curated selection of artworks that reflect how traditional color aesthetics were expressed in historical works and how they continue to inspire contemporary artistic thinking.
