On the evening of August 22, Qingdao’s May Fourth Square hosted a distinctive showcase of student learning on its circular stage. The performance was part of Qingdao’s 2026 programme to bring public cultural services directly to communities, as well as the Enjoy Every Season, Sing Every Week Square Carnival, and featured a special session dedicated to music study tours. Thirteen young performers from Jinan presented 17 musical pieces spanning a range of styles. Using music as their medium, they turned their experiences from travelling, learning and singing along the way into songs, sharing them with Qingdao residents and visitors from near and far.
The performance opened with the melody of Beyond’s Sky followed by Claire Kuo’s The Next Dawn, Jay Chou’s Grandpa’s Tea and Sir Deer’s I Want to Be the Wind. The children performed both solo and in groups, bringing together pop, ballads and rhythmic numbers in a lively mix of styles that added a burst of youthful energy to the summer night at May Fourth Square. For the finale, Lu Hu’s A Friend Like You brought all 13 voices together as one, with friendship, companionship and growing together leaving the evening on its warmest note.

From Jinan to Qingdao, and from the study-tour classroom to a city landmark, this unique learning experience not only gave the children a stage to express themselves, but also brought arts education for young people into the city’s public cultural spaces in the most engaging way. As public cultural services move beyond traditional venues and into public squares, the summer nights of the Qingdao’s Music Island persona now resonate not only with concerts by major artists, but also with the soaring voices of young people on study tours. It offers a fresh interpretation of Qingdao’s midsummer beauty: exploring the mountains and sea through study tours, building dreams through song, and embracing the limitless possibilities of youth.
The music never stops, and the beautiful moments continue.
