Why Soochow University
1. School known for a century
With a history of more than 2500 years, Suzhou is a famous city known for its superior location, developed economy and rich culture, and so it has earned its reputation as "Paradise on Earth" and "Venice of the East." Soochow University, with a history of one hundred years, is recognized as "the ten most beautiful campuses in the country". Founded in 1900 Soochow University is one of the earliest institutions of higher education in China.
2. Excellent location, elitary environment.
Suzhou has a developed regional economy, second only to Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, ranking first among prefecture-level cities in the whole country. Nearly 30 percent of the world's top 500 enterprises and more than 10,000 Taiwan-funded enterprises have settled in Suzhou. The school is adjacent to Shanghai and located in the central economic circle of the Yangtze river delta, providing broad space for students' high-quality internship and employment.
3. International exchanges, diverse projects
Soochow University has fully implemented the education international development strategy and has established interschool exchanges with over 150 universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries, including the United States, England, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and so on. As the university with the largest number of international students in Jiangsu Province, Soochow University enrolls more than 3,000 foreign students every year, forming an international school atmosphere.
The School of Overseas Education at Soochow University specialize in providing Chinese language classes and promoting Chinese culture among international students. Long-term Chinese language training courses as well as short-term Chinese culture and business advanced programmes are offered to foreign students. The institute has more than 30 teachers who teach Chinese language and culture, and most of them have teaching experience abroad. They have strong professional competence and have tremendous teaching skills, which makes them very popular among overseas students. The School of Overseas Education pays great attention to the language development ability, strictly controls the teaching staff and strives to create good learning atmosphere for international students.
01. Long-term Program (offline)
Length of Program: From one semester to three years
Schedule: 20 academic hours every week (each academic hour lasts for 45 minutes).
Level: Level 1 - level 7 (equivalent to HSK level, students higher than HSK 6 to enter level 7)
Class size: 20-30 students/class

Course Arrangement
l Required courses (in the morning): Comprehensive Chinese (Grammar and Chinese characters), Chinese listening, Chinese reading and Chinese conversations.
l Selective courses (in the afternoon): Listening comprehension, reading comprehension, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese geography, Chinese movies, Chinese folk customs, Chinese idioms and stories, etc. (each semester offers slightly different subjects)
l Cultural Club: Wushu (Chinese martial arts), Erhu (Chinese traditional music instrument), Beijing Opera, Suzhou Dialect
l Cultural Activities: (free); Making Chinese food, visiting ancient city, celebrating Chinese festivals etc.
l Cultural Activities: Visiting Suzhou gardens, sightseeing in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Nanjing and Wuzhen etc.

02. Long-term Program (online)
Length of Program: From one semester to three years
Schedule: About 12 academic hours every week (each academic hour lasts for 45 minutes).
Level: Level 1 - level 7 (equivalent to HSK level, students higher than HSK 6 to enter level 7)

03. Short-term Program
Length of the program: From two weeks to five weeks
Schedule: 26 academic hours every week (each academic hour lasts for 45 minutes).
Course duration: All year round, mainly during summer and winter vacation
Course program
l Over 10 people in a group
l Divided into three categories: Language and culture, language and economy, and culture and art
l The language program: Comprehensive Chinese (grammar, characters, writing etc.), Oral Communication Chinese (listening, conversations)
l The cultural program: Chinese caligraphy, tea ceremony, Tai chi, Suzhou gardens lecture, Chinese customs lecture, museum tours, Suzhou gardens tours, trips to Shanghai/Hangzhou/Wuxi/Nanjing/Wuzhen etc.
l The economy program: China's economy, Sino-foreign economic relations, China's opening-up policy, business strategies of Chinese companies, visits to Chinese and foreign companies etc.
l The art program: Suzhou silk craft, Suzhou fan craft, Kunqu, Guqin, Suzhou pastry making, Chinese ink wash painting etc.

06. An intensive HSK course

Course arrangement
l Programme description: Focusing on HSK requirements, improving writing and reading ability in short period of time; main goal of the course is passing HSK 3/4/5
l Chinese language level: Corresponding or slightly lower than HSK level
l Course content: Listening, reading, grammar, essay-writing, a mock exam is held at the test center on the weekend two weeks before the official exam to improve HSK test skills and help students be fully prepared in the aspect of psychology, skills and knowledge

07. Summer Chinese Language Program
Length of Program: 4 weeks (July – August)

l Basic level:(HSK level 1-2)、Intermediate level(HSK level 3-4)、Advanced level(HSK level 5-6)
l Over 10 students in one class
l Curriculum: Comprehensive Chinese, Conversation, Cultural courses (Chinese Calligraphy, Taijiquan, lectures on Suzhou Gardens etc.)
l Cultural Activity:
1. Inner city tour are offered once a week (including Suzhou gardens, museum, scenic spots etc)
2. Weekend excursions are available at students’ own expense. Cost will depend on each tourist attractions.
