Hangzhou International Day is back with a spectacular cultural highlight: the Winland · Verona International Opera Festival. The event will take place on September 5 at 20:00, right by the historic Beijing–Hangzhou Grand Canal, at the OMNI Music Plaza, Hangzhou Winland Center.
Known worldwide as the romantic city of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Verona is not only celebrated for its love stories but also for its century-old Verona Opera Festival, a must-visit destination for opera lovers across the globe.
Launched in 1913, the Arena di Verona Opera Festival lights up the city’s 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre with world-class performances—from Verdi’s Aida to Puccini’s Turandot—offering one of the most magical open-air opera experiences in the world.
Now, that Italian romance is coming to Hangzhou—with the Mayor of Verona attending as a guest of honor.
Italian conductor Matteo Beltrami will lead the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra and the Zhejiang Chorus, joined by two international opera stars: Italian soprano Maria Teresa Leva and Egyptian tenor Ragaa Eldin. Both of them have performed at top venues such as Arena di Verona, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and the Sydney Opera House, and they will bring unforgettable highlights from Romeo and Juliet and Aida.
Audiences will hear Juliet’s dreamy “Je veux vivre”, Romeo’s passionate “Ah! lève-toi, soleil!”, the grand “Triumphal March” from Aida, and the moving farewell duet “O terra, addio.” All of this will unfold under the stars along the Grand Canal in Hangzhou.
