The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) officially launched its Iroko Africa service last week when the MSC Kylie VII docked at Xiamen Port's Hairun Terminal. Analysts suggested that the new international trade route will deepen the connectivity of China's Belt and Road Initiative and densify the ocean shipping network connecting Asia and Africa. Xiamen Port currently operates three Africa-bound routes.
The Iroko route takes 29 days from Xiamen Port to Cape Town, South Africa, three days shorter than other routes. The route primarily services the export of plastic and rubber raw materials, building materials, machinery and equipment and daily necessities. The maiden voyage handled approximately 4,500 TEU when it departed on May 22 from Hairun Terminal.
