In 2024, Chengdu launched a new chapter of friendly engagement centered on people-to-people exchanges, fueled by innovative partnerships, and geared towards mutual prosperity, highlighting Chengdu’s commitment to “borderless engagement” with its international circle of friends.


01 Hosting 2024 Chengdu International Sister Cities Mayors Reception


On April 26, 2024, taking the opportunity of the attendance of international sister city mayors at Expo 2024 Chengdu Opening Ceremony, delegations from 19 provinces and cities of 18 countries, including Mozambique, Austria, and South Korea, were invited to convene with the theme of “Green Development for a Shared Future”. They discussed and renewed the friendship and explored cooperation opportunities, infusing new vitality into the future development of the city.


02 International Sister Cities Sculptures Adding Splendor to Expo 2024 Chengdu


In celebration of the inauguration of Expo 2024 Chengdu, many artists from Chengdu’s international sister cities shared their heartfelt wishes by creating 14 exceptional and intricately designed sculptures for Expo 2024 Chengdu. Through their artistic expressions, they communicated Chengdu’s spirit of friendship and inclusiveness, making a memorable impact on the Expo.


03 Hosting “Panda’s Singing” Chengdu International Children’s Chorus Week 2024


On July 23, 2024, ten outstanding children’s choirs from France, New Zealand, South Korea, as well as Macao, Chongqing, and Chengdu of China gathered to inject fresh musical vitality into Chengdu children’s chorus landscape. This event offered the people of Chengdu a delightful musical experience that crossed borders and celebrated a rich tapestry of cultures.


04 Organizing 2024 “My Story of Chinese Hanzi” International Competition Finals


On September 10, 2024, 11 international student contestants from the United States, the Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, Sweden, Vietnam, and other countries shared stories of cultural exchange, mutual learning, and integration through the Chinese characters (Hanzi). Ibarhat Okobo Joice Rold Yannice (Yang Si), a student from the Republic of the Congo currently studying at Chengdu University of Technology and nominated by Chengdu, was awarded the first prize.


05 Hosting 2024 University Presidents Exchange of Chengdu International Sister Cities Higher Education Institutions Alliance


On October 24, 2024, more than 80 representatives from eight universities representing Chengdu’s international sister cities, along with 16 local universities, convened in Chengdu. They exchanged insights and engaged in discussions about educational development, fostering the integration and alignment of educational resources.


06 Hosting Chengdu International Sister Cities Chengdu Marathon Run


On October 27, 2024, 16 elite athletes from seven international sister cities—the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, and Brazil—gathered in Chengdu to take part in the Chengdu Marathon, leaving their footprints across the city and fostering friendship through their runs.


07 Granted “International Friendship City Award for Outstanding Contribution”


In November 2024, Chengdu was granted “International Friendship City Award for Outstanding Contribution” by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries in recognition of its remarkable international friendship city achievements in recent years. This award represents the pinnacle of national recognition for friendship city engagement. A total of ten provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) and ten cities in China were honored with this award, with Chengdu standing out as the only winner from Sichuan Province.
