Pudong & Hongqiao Airports Cancel Terminal Entry Security Checks

Starting Tuesday, passengers departing from Shanghai’s Pudong and Hongqiao airports no longer need to undergo security checks at terminal entrances. This significant change is expected to enhance the overall passenger experience by reducing wait times and improving the flow of travelers entering the airport.

Previously, passengers were required to pass through two separate security checks—one at the entrance and another before boarding. Now, metal detectors and X-ray scanners at the terminal doors have been removed. Instead, passengers will pass through an explosives detection device before directly entering the check-in area.

While the new procedure eliminates the need for entrance security checks, baggage screening will now occur at airline counters during check-in. Full-body and carry-on screening will still be conducted prior to boarding, ensuring the same level of safety and security as before.

According to an airport staff member, the new measures were implemented starting Tuesday, and early feedback from passengers indicates that the change has already led to shorter wait times and a smoother check-in process. Social media posts from travelers further corroborate this improvement in efficiency.

In the past, security checks at Shanghai airports were significantly more stringent. Since August 2016, both Pudong and Hongqiao airports had implemented additional security checks at terminal entrances, requiring passengers to pass through X-ray scanners and metal detectors before entering the public areas of the terminals. This was done to enhance anti-terrorism measures and ensure that passengers did not carry dangerous items into the airport.

However, these extra checks led to criticism from travelers, particularly during peak travel times, as long queues formed at entrance security checks. Passengers voiced frustration about the increased wait times and the inconvenience caused by having to go through security multiple times.
