West Lake night tour buses return with two new scenic routes

Aug 20, 2025

Hangzhou

Over 16 years ago, open-top night buses around West Lake were a beloved summer tradition in Hangzhou, with scenic routes like "Night Tour Line 1" and "Night Tour Line 9" offering breezy rides past landmarks and along Yanggong Causeway (picturesque causeway running along the west side of West Lake).

For many locals, including those who first rode as children, it was an unforgettable mix of cool night air, sparkling views, and friendly waves from pedestrians. Now, the "West Lake Night Tour Sightseeing Bus" is back — giving both long-time residents and newcomers the chance to relive or discover this uniquely Hangzhou experience.
Recently, the "West Lake Night Tour Sightseeing Bus" officially returned with two routes — the "City Roller Coaster Pro" and the "West Lake Eco Sightseeing Bus". So, what's special about them?
Many Hangzhou locals and visitors know about the city's Bus 194, nicknamed the "roller coaster bus". The "City Roller Coaster Pro" is its upgraded version, designed for young people and thrill-seekers, offering an immersive adventure of racing through mountain roads and weaving past tea plantations.
Inside "City Roller Coaster Pro" bus, there's a decibel meter showing passengers' scream volumes in real time, and a 'tunnel gate' with glowing visuals and mood lighting for an immersive nighttime atmosphere.
The biggest surprise is that the front section seating — instead of the usual sideways view, the high stool seats face directly out the window, with a bar to lean on for an uninterrupted view of West Lake.
As night falls, the "City Roller Coaster Pr" departs, passing from bustling streets to shaded roads and the serene West Lake, where Long Bridge, Leifeng Pagoda, and Ruan Gong Islet appeared in turn, drawing passengers to snap photos with their phones.
The "City Roller Coaster Pro" departs nightly at 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm from Shengli Theater, stopping at seven scenic points. Whether it's a family outing for novelty or friends seeking adventure, you'll find your own joy in the night air of the tea mountains and along the winding roads.
The other route is the ‘West Lake Eco Sightseeing Bus’, departing nightly at 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm from Shengli Theater. It connects five stops— letting passengers immerse themselves in the natural charm of the evening: the gentle breeze along Yanggong Causeway, fireflies flickering in Maojiabu, and rippling reflections in Yuhu Bay.
The "West Lake Eco Sightseeing Bus" has an interior full of nature-inspired design. On the left, a moss-covered creative wall adds a fresh, wild touch. In the middle, the remodeled "eco wall" displays 24 plant specimens, including nationally protected rare species — showcasing West Lake's ecological achievements in recent years. Combined with a woodsy fragrance, the ride feels like traveling through a secret forest.
Trial run special: 25 yuan per person, with advance booking available
