Xiamen’s new materials industry focuses on specialty metals, inorganic non-metallic materials, and advanced polymers, encompassing optoelectronic materials, new energy materials, biomedical and biodegradable materials, advanced carbon materials, and environmental materials. The city’s functional materials industry is a designated a national strategic emerging industry cluster. Strong R&D capabilities are fostered by institutions like Xiamen University, Huaqiao University, Xiamen University of Technology, the 725 Institute (Xiamen Materials Research Institute) of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Xiamen Institute of Rare Earth Materials. The city boasts 34 R&D centers (8 national-level, 8 provincial-level), 8 engineering technology research centers (5 national-level, 3 provincial-level), and 23 key laboratories. Leading companies include Xiamen Tungsten, Xiamen Tungsten New Energy, Xiashun Holdings, Hengkun New Materials, Dangsheng New Materials, Xiamen Changsu, HMT (Xiamen) New Technical Materials, and Yanjan New Materials.
