Hangzhou’s airport hit a new record of daily passenger flow as it handled 899 flights with close to 150,000 passenger arrivals and departures. Starting from February 12, the airport handled more than 140,000 passenger arrivals and departures for five days in a row, shattering its records four times.
Both domestic and international passengers were on the rise in numbers during the Spring Festival travel rush, according to the city’s airport. From January 26 to February 16, the airport handled 19,800 passenger flights with 2.94 million travelers, up 30.8 percent and 60.3 percent year on year. The figures were up 11.8 percent and 18.4 percent from 2019. Particularly during the gold week of the Spring Festival holiday, the daily average of passengers surged 72 percent year on year.
Occupancy rates of flights between Hangzhou and cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Chengdu, Kunming and Xi’an stayed above 90 percent. Flights between Hangzhou and Guangzhou were the most frequent with daily number exceeding 60. Recent flights to Sanya and Harbin were heavily booked. The airport has been actively coordinating airlines to increase transport capacity and offer passengers with a safe and comfort journey.
With the implementation of visa-free policies in Singapore and Thailand, outbound and inbound travels increased during the Spring Festival travel rush. It was expected that the number of outbound and inbound passengers would total 500,000, a surge of 400 percent from the previous year. New charter flights to international destinations including Kalibo of the Philippines, Malé of Maldives, and Phu Quoc Island of Vietnam were opened. The number of flights to international destinations were increased from 237 a week in early January to current 275 a week.
To facilitate passengers carrying much baggage, the airport offers luggage-to-subway services, enabling passengers to take their luggage to the subway station by cart. More than 5,000 passengers have benefited from the service. The airport also offered facilitation to e-hailing services, taxies and airport subway services for the convenience of passengers.
