Jingzhou 2026.06.20 - 2026.06.20
On June 20, the 2026 Jingzhou Ancient City Dragon Boat Race will grandly commence at the Jiulong Yuan (Nine-Dragon Abyss) waters just outside the East Gate. As Jingzhou's most influential cultural tourism event of the year, this year's dragon boat race not only retains the excitement of traditional competitive rowing but also deeply integrates the wildly popular "Warring States Robe Parade" IP, creating a Chu cultural feast where "city and water coexist, and ancient and modern blend." It is expected to attract over 200,000 visitors to the event.
I. Dragon Boat Racing on the Moat: A Truly Unique Ancient City Racecourse
The greatest feature of the Jingzhou Dragon Boat Race is its one-of-a-kind racecourse — the thousand-year-old ancient city moat. Unlike river or lake courses in other cities, here the dragon boats glide beneath the blue brick and black tile ancient city walls. The sound of paddles intertwines with Chu music, seamlessly merging the city, water, boats, and people, creating a profound sense of historical depth.
This year's event has reached a new scale, with an expected 40 teams from across the country and over 1,200 athletes participating. They will compete in three categories: professional, public, and university, in 100m, 200m, and 500m straight-line sprints, as well as a 2,000m pursuit race. On the morning of the race day, a grand opening ceremony will be held at 8:30 a.m. , featuring two traditional rituals: a Chu-style river sacrifice prayer and the dragon's eye dotting ceremony. Priests dressed in Chu attire will recite eulogies and offer orchids to Qu Yuan; 12 officiating guests will dot the eyes of the dragon boats, symbolizing "the dragon raises its head, bringing good fortune."
During the races, a water performance area will be set up along the moat, featuring special acts such as Chu-style bamboo drifting, water flyboarding, and lantern fish boat parades, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the unique charm of the Jiangnan water town of Jingchu.
II. Upgrading a Top-Tier IP: The Thousand-Person Warring States Robe Parade Takes Center Stage
The most anticipated part of this year's Dragon Boat Festival is undoubtedly the Thousand-Person Warring States Robe Parade. Following the tremendous success of Jingzhou's Warring States Robe Parade during the May Day holiday, which attracted 100,000 visitors in a single day and went viral online, the parade during the Dragon Boat Festival will be a fully upgraded version, becoming the largest Warring States robe-themed parade in the country.
The parade will commence at 3:08 p.m. on June 20. The route starts at Binyang Tower, passes through Jiulong Bridge, Jingnan Road, and Zhang Juzheng Street, and finally ends at Guandi Temple Square, covering a total distance of approximately 2 kilometers. The parade will be divided into five themed formations:
Along the parade route, several interactive photo spots will be set up. Visitors can take photos with historical reenactors (NPCs), experience Chu-style etiquette, and participate in traditional games like touhu (pitch-pot) and shooting the five poisons. At 7:30 p.m. that evening, a special nighttime Warring States Robe Light Parade will be held, where performers in glowing Chu-style robes carrying lantern fish slowly walk along the ancient city wall, resembling a Milky Way traversing through a thousand years.
III. Three Supporting Activities: Full-Day Entertainment Without a Dull Moment
In addition to the dragon boat race and the Warring States Robe Parade, Jingzhou has prepared three special supporting activities to create an immersive "Three Days of Dragon Boat Festival Joy" experience.
1. Chu-style Intangible Cultural Heritage Market
An 800-meter-long intangible cultural heritage market will be set up at Binyang Tower Square and Zhang Juzheng Street, bringing together over 30 intangible cultural heritage crafts, including Jingchu paper-cutting, Chu bamboo slip making, lacquerware painting, and sugar painting. Visitors can watch live demonstrations by heritage artisans and even try their hand at the crafting process, taking home unique Chu-style cultural products. The market also features a food court offering Jingzhou specialties such as Jingzhou fish cake, Gong'an beef rice noodles, and Honghu lotus root soup, allowing visitors to sample the flavors of Jingchu in one stop.
2. Dragon Boat Festival Folk Culture Experience Zone
A folk culture experience zone will be set up at Jiulong Yuan Park, offering free traditional activities to the public, including making zongzi (rice dumplings), weaving five-colored silk threads, dotting cinnabar, and hanging mugwort. A special "Qu Yuan Poetry Contest" will invite visitors to participate in poetry solitaire games for a chance to win Jingzhou attraction tickets and cultural gift packages. For families with children, fun activities such as land dragon boat races and parent-child water battles will be available, allowing children to learn about traditional culture through play.
3. Ancient City Night Tour Light and Shadow Show
During the Dragon Boat Festival, the Jingzhou Ancient City night tour will be fully upgraded. Every evening at 8:00 p.m., 8:30 p.m., and 9:00 p.m. , the "Charm of Jingchu" light and shadow show will be projected onto Binyang Tower, using 3D projection technology to recreate 800 years of the glorious history of the Chu State on the ancient city wall. "Dragon Boat Festival-themed painted boats" will also operate on the moat, allowing visitors to take a night cruise, admire the shimmering lights of the ancient city along the shores, and listen to performances of Chu music.
