The publisher, Li Ling, is being held in a detention center by the Japanese military police. Zheng Weilan, an ardent admirer of Hai Ming, visits Li Ling in hopes of seeing the "fan letter." Zheng and Li begin to piece together the mysterious past of Xia Guang.
