TWINNING AGREEMENT SIGNED IN MAY, 1988

Leipzig is located in central Germany and is the largest city in the Free State of Saxony. The population is around 600,000. Leipzig enjoys the reputation in the world as a city of fairs, books and music. Boasting advanced transportation, Leipzig is located at the intersection of Europe’s two main transportation and development axes. The main driving force of economy is the service industry. In May 1988, Nanjing established sister-city relationship with Leipzig, then a city of the German Democratic Republic. After the unification, Mayor Lehmann-Grube of Leipzig led a government delegation to Nanjing and re-signed a friendly cooperation agreement in April of 1994.
In the 1990s, Nanjing and Leipzig had close exchanges, and made a series of mutual visits by governmental delegations. Since the beginning of this century, the two cities have conducted extensive cooperation in culture, education, and exhibition. In 2007, Nanjing held “Nanjing Day” event in Leipzig, which was warmly welcomed. In October of the same year, the Mayor of Leipzig led an economic and trade delegation to Nanjing and successfully held the “Leipzig Economic and Trade Promotion Conference”. In August 2013, the young consultant of Youth Olympics from Leipzig participated in the Asian Youth Olympics and the “Nanjing World Historical & Cultural Cities Expo”. In August 2018, grand commemorative events were held in Leipzig to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of sister-city relationship between the two cities. In 2020, the “The Family of Leipzig” sculpture created by Leipzig artist Michael Fischer-Art was placed in Nanjing International Friendship Park.
