Nature as Inspiration: Lai Shaoqi and the Evolution of Modern Landscape Painting

Marking the 110th anniversary of the birth of Lai Shaoqi, a master whose artistry spanned poetry, calligraphy, painting, seal carving, and writing, the Guangzhou Museum of Art proudly presents this landmark exhibition. It brings together works by 53 distinguished artists, with a central focus on landscape painting—the genre that most vividly reflects Lai Shaoqi’s artistic vision and achievements. Using Lai’s practice as a point of departure, the exhibition extends outward to his mentors, peers, and contemporaries, tracing the transformation of Chinese landscape painting over more than three centuries, from the late Ming dynasty to the modern era.
