Old Tales Retold

Nezha, Sun Wukong, and other Chinese mythological characters have survived in part because each generation finds new ways to tell their stories. Old Tales Retold gathers 60 artists, placing modern masters such as Ju Lian, Qi Baishi, and Fu Baoshi alongside contemporary artists including Peng Wei and Wu Jian'an, while illustrators bring another visual vocabulary into the conversation. The exhibition is divided between modern classics, contemporary art, and illustration. Familiar myths, therefore, pass through very different hands, revealing how stories inherited from the past are edited, reimagined, and given new visual identities by successive generations.
