Enjoy the Millennia-Old Charm of Shu Brocade at Museums

Known for the prosperous production of Shu brocade,

Chengdu earned the name “City of Brocade Commissioner”.

The millennia-old craft of Shu brocade

is now recognized as national-level intangible cultural heritage.

Now, let us head to Jinmen and museums

for a glimpse of the thousand-year brilliance of Shu brocade.

Jinmen Silk Culture Town

Located at Sanhechang in Xindu District, an ancient town with a history of over a thousand years, Jinmen marks the beginning of the Southern Silk Road. It features museums, workshops, experience centers, study tour bases, and other offerings, which are combined to create a comprehensive tourist route where “a piece of history can be found in five steps and a different kind of experience can be spotted every three steps”.

Sichuan Silk Museum

The exhibition hall of 3,000 square meters systematically chronicles the complete history of Shu brocade, from ancient sericulture practices to its modern industrialization.

Shu Brocade Workshop

Visitors can observe master artisans at work up close. The full traditional production process is on display, including silk reeling, cross-stitching, and loom weaving.

Tianfu Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Experience Center

The center brings together over 100 representative intangible cultural heritage items, such as Shu brocade, Shu embroidery, and Chengdu lacquerware, and more than 200 representative inheritors. Visitors can participate in Shu brocade DIY sessions to make brooches, hair ornaments, and pendants. Finished pieces can be taken home.

Opening hours: The entire scenic area is open to the public all day free of charge.

Sichuan Silk Museum: 09:30-16:00 daily (free admission; no reservation required).

Shu Brocade Workshop: 09:30-18:30 from Monday to Sunday. Last entry at 18:00.

Tianfu Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Experience Center: 09:30-18:00 from Monday to Friday and 10:00-18:30 from Saturday to Sunday (free admission; experience sessions require reservation).

Transportation: Visitors may take Metro Line 3 to Sanhechang Station and exit from Exit A.

Chengdu Shu Brocade and Embroidery Museum

Chengdu Shu Brocade and Embroidery Museum is a national second-grade museum and an inheritance base for Shu embroidery, a national-level representative intangible cultural heritage item.

Here, visitors can observe up close the traditional hand-weaving craft that has been passed down for more than two thousand years and witness how each piece of Shu brocade is meticulously created inch by inch under the craftsmanship philosophy that “every inch of brocade is worth its weight in gold”.

Opening hours: 09:30-18:30 from Monday to Sunday. Last entry at 18:00.

Free admission. Visitors are required to scan a QR code on site to enter the museum.
