Expats explore historical Suzhou through citywalk

A group comprised of 25 people from China, Russia, India, Thailand, Bangladesh, the U.S., South Africa, Sudan, and other countries and regions embarked on a citywalk in Suzhou yesterday, feeling the urban and cultural landscapes of the city steeped in history.

The Suzhou Tourist Information Center on Fenghuang Street苏州市旅游咨询中心(凤凰街中心站) is adjacent to a number of scenic spots, including Dinghui Temple定慧寺, Twin Pagodas双塔, Shuangta Market双塔市集, and Pingjiang Road平江路. A comprehensive service space open to the public for free, the center marked the beginning of the group's journey. "The view from the third floor is amazing. I can see the Twin Pagodas and the distant Gate of the Orient at the same time. It beautifully juxtaposes the traditional and modern sides of Suzhou," said a foreign student from Soochow University.

Walking about 200 meters east along Dinghuisi Lane, the group arrived at Wu Zuoren Art Museum吴作人艺术馆, where artworks donated by the renowned contemporary artist Wu Zuoren to Suzhou are on display. The museum is currently hosting an exhibition of art works and documents of Wu Zuoren and artists studying in France to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations.
Niujia Lane钮家巷 located in Pingjiang Historical Block is one of the most representative ancient streets in the city. Though less crowded compared with Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street, it is full of artistic atmosphere, as the graffiti at Dongshengli corridor东升里文化艺术长廊 has injected new vitality into the historical spot. A wall featuring the phrase "I love you" in over 80 languages instantly captivated the visitors and became the background of their photos.
Their last stop was China Kunqu Opera Museum中国昆曲博物馆, which is housed in Quanjin Guild, a nationally protected site built by businessmen from Shanxi province in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). After being introduced to the origin and development of the ancient art form, the visitors could not help but praise its profound history and culture.
