4 Hangzhou autumn hikes for unbeatable sunrise & sea of clouds views

Oct 07, 2026

Hangzhou

The prime period  for enjoying sunrise and sea of clouds views in Hangzhou falls  between early September and early November. It’s the time of year with the richest layered landscapes, the most stable weather, and the highest chance of catching both sunrise and rolling clouds.
We’ve picked four perfect spots around Hangzhou to hike up the mountains, and witness the magic of sunrise above a sea of clouds.

01 The best Sea of Clouds in Hangzhou

Taizijian Peak · Lin’an District

Taizijian Peak is regarded as the ultimate spot for sea of clouds in Hangzhou. Its 1,558-meter-high ridge offers completely unobstructed views, and September to October is officially recognized as the best viewing season. If it rains the day before and clears up overnight, you’ve got a great chance to see surging clouds pouring down the valley at the summit between 5:30 and 7:00 a.m.

Getting there: 2.5 hours’ drive from downtown to Taizijian Peak Service Station. No direct public transport available.
Entry: No general admission fee. Real-name reservation required 1–7 days in advance via the Visit Lin’an mini-program, with daily visitor limits. A 10-yuan sanitation fee per person is charged on site.
Hiking: 1.2 km one-way from the post station to the main peak, taking about 30 minutes.
Camping: Designated camping area at the summit; basic supplies available at the post station.

02 Drive-Straight-Up Sea of Clouds for Lazy Hikers

Qianniu Gang · Lin’an District

If you want the mountain view without a long hike, Qianniu Gang is the easier option. At around 1,470 meters, a winding mountain road leads up to the summit camping and viewing area. On the right morning, wind turbines rise above rolling clouds — one of the most distinctive scenes here.

Getting there: 2.5 hours’ drive from downtown to Qianniu Gang, Daming and drive straight to the summit.
Entry: No tickets or reservations required. If entering via internal roads of Daming Mountain Scenic Area, a small road maintenance fee may apply.
Hiking: No hiking needed to reach the main viewing platform and camping area.
Camping: Free camping area at the summit, plus premium paid glamping sites.

03 Closest Tea Garden Sea of Clouds to Downtown

Anding Mountain · Andingshan Village, Li’an Highway, Fuyang District

Don’t want to travel far? Anding Mountain, just an hour’s drive from downtown, lets you take in tea gardens, sea of clouds, sunrise and river views all in one trip. At 790 meters above sea level, it sees the most frequent sea of clouds in November. Tea terraces weave through the drifting clouds, with the outline of the Fuchun River.

Getting there: 1.5 hours’ drive from downtown to Anding Mountain Visitor Center. You can also take Metro Line 6 and transfer to bus.
Entry: No reservation or ticket required. Popular viewing spots like the Sky Mirror at the summit charge separate admission.
Hiking: Drive straight to the summit. If hiking from Anding Village, the trail is 2 km in total.
Camping: Officially designated free camping area; tent rental also available.

04 Secluded Meadow Sea of Clouds in a Hidden Realm

Caoshangang · Lin’an District

Wanna escape the crowds? Tucked away in the Longmen Secret Realm, Caoshangang is a 1,192-meter summit, where vast soft meadows stretch out beside groves of golden larch trees, creating rich, photogenic layers. At night you can gaze up at a sky full of stars — it’s a hidden gem for both cloud seas and stargazing.

Getting there: 1.5–2 hours’ drive from downtown to Caoshangang Starry Sky City, Longmen Secret Realm.
Entry: Longmen Secret Realm scenic area is free to enter. Camping reservations required in advance.
Hiking: Drive straight to the site. Full hiking trail is 6 km.
Camping: Formal commercial campground. Bring your own gear or go glamping with everything provided. Facilities include restrooms, hot showers and dining.

Best viewing conditions: Highest chance of sea of clouds when it rains the previous day, the night is clear and calm, and morning humidity is above 85%.
Packing tips: Bring a thick jacket and warm sleeping bag for camping. Wind protection is essential for sunrise viewing in the early morning.
Leave no trace: Practice no-trace camping in mountain areas and pack out all trash. Open fires are prohibited in the wild; always follow fire safety rules.
Safety note: Travel with experienced drivers and hikers. Be cautious when teaming up with strangers.
