GZ Cultural Center launches immersive VR journey to Song Dynasty

A virtual reality experience transporting users to 12th-century China has opened at the Guangzhou Cultural Center. The 300-square-meter free-roam space utilizes motion tracking and haptic technology to create China’s first officially certified Song Dynasty-themed immersive environment.

 

Developed by Shanghai Zaison Tech, the 30-minute journey takes users to Lin'an (modern Hangzhou)—the Southern Song Dynasty capital. Participants navigate canal networks by virtual boat, explore night markets illuminated by floating oil lamps, and witness celebratory processions following General Yue Fei's military victories. The experience concludes with a seamless transition back to modern Guangzhou.
Certified under the National Virtual Film Registry (Dragon Seal No. 017), the installation departs from stationary VR setups by allowing up to eight participants to interact simultaneously with digitally reconstructed historical scenes.

 

Operational Details

Location: Quyi Garden, Guangzhou Cultural Center (Metro Line 3/11, Datang Station)

Schedule: Tuesday-Sunday, 9:00-17:30 (closed Mondays)

Access: Free trial sessions during July; ticketed entry begins August 1 via the official WeChat account (广州市文化馆).

Safety: Flat shoes required; helmets disinfected between sessions; staff-assisted device calibration is mandatory.
