Xiamen City University is a full-time public higher vocational college established by the municipal government in May 2005 through the integration of Xiamen Radio and Television University (renamed Xiamen Open University in 2020), Xiamen Education College and Xiamen Workers' University. In March 2007, Xiamen City Construction Secondary Vocational School was merged into Xiamen City University as a whole.
Xiamen City University and Xiamen Open University operate under an integrated model, promoting the coordinated development of higher vocational education and open education. The school is located in Siming District, covering an area of 500.35 mu. Currently, it has 659 staff members (including 466 full-time teachers), among whom there are 8 teachers from Taiwan, 71 with doctoral degrees, and 73.8% are "dual-qualified" teachers. In 2024, the school will offer 30 vocational college programs, with 8,978 students enrolled. A total of 227 international students from 18 countries have been admitted. The open education (adult education) program currently offers 43 undergraduate and associate degree programs, with 18,440 students.
In recent years, the school has refined its educational philosophy of "student-oriented, cross-border integration, demand-driven, and excellence-pursuing", adhering to a student-centered approach in running the school and a people-oriented approach in governance. It has developed a campus culture and educational characteristics of "industry-education integration for common development, and collaborative education through great love and craftsmanship". It is an "Outstanding Higher Vocational College" designated by the Ministry of Education, a provincial-level exemplary modern higher vocational college in Fujian Province, and a Class A project construction college under the "Double High" plan of Fujian Province. It has been awarded the titles of "Civilized School" and "Civilized Campus" of the province for many times.
The school adheres to the educational philosophy of "Born for the City, Thriving for the City", deepens the integration of industry and education, and all its majors are closely aligned with regional industries. Currently, it has 5 national backbone majors, 2 provincial high-level professional clusters, 4 provincial service industry characteristic professional clusters, 3 provincial industry-education integration characteristic majors, and 4 Xiamen high-level majors. It has taken the lead in establishing 1 provincial city-level industry-education integration body, 2 national industry-education integration communities, and 1 provincial exemplary vocational education alliance. It possesses 1 national vocational education "dual-qualified" teacher training base, 4 provincial industrial colleges, 2 professional cluster training bases, 4 high-level specialized industry-education integration training bases, and 1 Xiamen BRICS New Industrial Capacity Enhancement Training Base. Since 2017, it has won 14 provincial teaching achievement awards, including 3 special prizes, and 2 courses have been selected as exemplary courses for ideological and political education in the curriculum by the Ministry of Education (200 courses nationwide and 5 in Fujian Province). In the past five years, the school's admission rate has been 99.09%, the average employment rate of graduates has been 96%, the professional matching rate has been over 77%, and the employment rate within the province has been 86%.
