Introduction
Founded in 2002, HIS is an award-winning, non-profit international IB World School located in Hangzhou. Our diverse student body consists of over 900 children of foreign nationals from more than 50 nationalities. We offer both a rigorous academic curriculum and a well-rounded learning experience for students, from Early Years through Grade 12. Our mission is to provide international learners with opportunities to pursue academic and personal excellence within a caring community.
In 2022, HIS relocated to a new, purpose-built campus. Covering over 50,000 square meters, the HIS campus redefines education through open, shared, and multi-functional learning and leisure spaces. It is characterized by two buildings: The Cocoon (ECE Campus) and The Lantern (Main Campus).
Why HIS?
10 Reasons Our Community Chose HIS
1. HIS is the Only Non-Profit, internationally accredited (WASC), IB World School in Zhejiang Province.
HIS was founded in 2002 by the International Schools Foundation as a non-profit, independent, day school. The current Chinese President, Xi Jinping, visited HIS to inaugurate the first international school in Hangzhou. We are proudly accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and we are authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Primary Years Programme (PYP).
2. HIS is a truly international school
HIS celebrates the diversity of over 900 students from over 50 nationalities. A cornerstone of HIS learning is its commitment to international mindedness. We pride ourselves on having an outstanding international faculty with experienced, IB-trained educators from around the world. We have over 100 expat teaching staff, most of whom come from the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and South Africa.
3. HIS is a Community-Centered School
The HIS mission focuses on ‘learners’, which includes opportunities and a strong commitment to developing parenting skills and professional growth all with the common goal of improving support for student learning.
4. HIS is Rigorous at All Grade Levels
At HIS, we believe everyone should be challenged, included, and successful. HIS develops students to be problem-solvers, innovators, and future-ready. We have a strong commitment to English and Chinese language and literacy programs, Singapore and IB Maths, and IB Sciences. Many HIS students continue to score in the top 1% in worldwide standardized testing (NWEA, PSAT, SAT, IB Diploma). We have also excellent programs in Athletics, Aquatics, Visual Arts, and Performing Arts.
5. HIS Greatly Values Mandarin and Chinese Culture
We believe in the tremendous opportunity for learners to explore the culture of Hangzhou and other parts of China, to learn Mandarin at any level, and to participate within the local community and in partnership with local schools.
6. HIS is an Inclusive Learning Community
Admissions is open to all international applicants and we have a strong Student Support Services Team. We believe a truly international school serves and benefits by including as much of the international community as possible. At HIS, we don’t ask if a student is good enough for HIS, instead, we ask if HIS is good enough for the student.
7. HIS Prepares Graduates with Leadership and Excellence
Whether moving on to government service, a gap year, or attendance at university, HIS students have achieved in the top 1% of PSAT and SAT scores, have received the highest IB Diploma and IB Bilingual Diploma marks, and have attended top universities worldwide. The most recent class average IB Diploma score was 34 points.
8. HIS is a Truly Caring and Supportive Place to Be
HIS has truly caring teachers, supportive parents, and involved students. From the time we first welcome our families, until the time their children cross our stage at graduation, we commit ourselves to supporting each student and their families. We devote significant attention and planning for community transition to HIS and from HIS. We are a place to thrive!
9. HIS has an Outstanding Faculty
100% of the HIS faculty are highly qualified educators and IB-trained. Over 65% carry a Master’s Degree or higher and were recruited from the best international recruitment associations in the world. Our teachers average over 13 years of teaching experience, and all love living in Hangzhou.
10. HIS has Gold Dragons Spirit
HIS values its participation in student cultural and athletic exchanges. We are a member of ACAMIS, HISAC, CISSA, SISAC, SSL, and EARCOS. Our teams regularly bring home championship trophies and sportsmanship awards in many sports and activities.
