Founded in 1928, Zhongshan Hospital Xiamen University (also known as Xiamen Zhongshan Hospital) was established through donations from patriotic overseas Chinese and prominent local figures to promote the spirit of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s vision of "the world is for all, and the benefit of society." Dr. Lin Wenqing, the then president of Xiamen University and a medical expert, became the first director of the hospital. With the development of the Xiamen Special Economic Zone, the hospital relocated and was rebuilt as a key supporting project of the zone. It resumed operation on July 1, 1988. In 2005, it became the first affiliated hospital of Xiamen University. Today, it has developed into a comprehensive tertiary-grade A hospital that integrates medical services, education, research, and preventive healthcare, and is a world-renowned research-oriented university hospital.The hospital has been awarded the A+ rating for four consecutive years in the national “National Examination” performance evaluation for tertiary public hospitals. It has also been included in the "Top 100 Hospitals" of the China Hospital Competitiveness Rankings for three consecutive years.

The hospital currently operates across three campuses: the main campus, the Jinbang Branch, and the Xiahe Branch. The main campus covers an area of approximately 57,000 square meters; the Jinbang Branch covers about 2,600 square meters; and the Xia he Branch covers about 1,548 square meters. The hospital is equipped with 2,500 beds and employs over 3,300 staff members. Among them, there are 889 experts with senior titles, 950 individuals holding master's and doctoral degrees, and 122 master's and doctoral advisors. The hospital undertakes clinical course teaching for medical schools such as the Xiamen University School of Medicine, Fujian Medical University, and Xiamen Medical College. It is also a training base for master's and doctoral students of Xiamen University and Fujian Medical University.

The hospital is equipped with globally innovative medical technologies, including the first-ever Color Spectral CT, high-end Spectral CT, second-generation dual-source CT, and the first 3.0T LightSpeed MRI in Fujian Province. Additionally, it has advanced medical equipment such as a head Gamma Knife, linear accelerator, dual-panel digital subtraction angiography X-ray machine (DSA), positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and more. In 2021, the hospital introduced the latest fourth-generation Da Vinci robotic surgery system (Xi), which is the most advanced in the world. Several departments have pioneered the use of new clinical technologies and projects, filling many gaps in medical technology.

In the past five years, the hospital has received more than 300 research project grants at various levels, including over 100 national-level projects such as the "863" and "973" sub-projects, the National Natural Science Foundation for Excellent Young Scientists, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the "11th Five-Year Plan" Science and Technology Support Program. To date, the hospital has been awarded nearly 100 provincial and municipal-level Science and Technology Progress Awards, holds 63 national patents, and has published 1,178 SCI papers. From 2010 to 2015, the hospital ranked first in the province for six consecutive years in the National Natural Science Foundation project approvals. In 2017 and 2018, the hospital was ranked first in Xiamen City in the Nature Index published by the Nature Publishing Group. In 2018, six of the hospital's specialties made it to the top 100 in the China Hospital Science and Technology Value Ranking, ranking first in Xiamen City for the number of specialties on the list. In 2019, the Infectious Disease specialty ranked in the top 50 nationally and first in the province for three consecutive years in the China Hospital Science and Technology Value ranking. In the Fudan University School of Management's evaluation of the research strength of 279 hospitals nationwide, Zhongshan Hospital was the only one in Xiamen to be included. In the 2020 China Hospital Science and Technology Value Ranking, five of the hospital's disciplines ranked first in the city, and two disciplines entered the national top 50.

The hospital has long been committed to the integration of medicine and education, fostering mutual growth. In 1992, it became a teaching hospital of Fujian Medical College, and in 1998, it became the clinical teaching base for the Medical Laboratory program of Fujian Medical University. In 2001, it became the First Clinical College of the Xiamen University School of Medicine. Currently, the hospital also undertakes teaching tasks for various institutions, including Fujian Medical University, Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Xiamen Medical College. The hospital actively promotes the integration of departments and supports the construction of Xiamen University's "New Medical Discipline." In 2020, it took the lead in establishing the first department of Gastroenterology at the Xiamen University School of Medicine. The Clinical Nursing Department of Zhongshan Hospital, Xiamen University, is a key clinical specialty in Fujian Province. The hospital fully leverages regional cooperation resources and innovates nursing management models. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, it promotes the in-depth development of various disciplines. Achievements have been made in nursing management, education, research, information technology, and clinical specialty nursing. The hospital has also driven precise nursing quality control with goal-oriented management, as well as continuous quality improvement based on evidence. In 2006, the hospital was established as a "Fujian Provincial Women's Civilized Post." In 2011, it was recognized as the affiliated unit of the Xiamen Nursing Management Quality Control Center and designated as a clinical training base for PICC specialist nurses. In the same year, it was accredited as the clinical training base for the first nursing specialty outpatient clinic in Xiamen. In 2013, it was rated as a key clinical nursing specialty in Xiamen and approved as one of the first nursing training bases for operating room and emergency rescue nurses in Fujian Province. The hospital actively responds to the national "Internet + Healthcare" initiative, focusing on building a smart hospital. In recent years, the hospital has made remarkable progress in information technology development. It was recognized as a "2017 National Information Technology Demonstration Hospital for Improving Medical Services." In 2018, the hospital passed the national "Health Information Interoperability Maturity Level 4A" evaluation by the National Health Commission. In 2019, it achieved the "Health Information Interoperability Maturity Level 5B" evaluation. In 2020, it was rated as a Level 5 hospital in the National Health Commission's Electronic Medical Record System Functional Application Level Evaluation. Additionally, in 2020, the hospital became the first comprehensive hospital in the province to implement "credit-based medical services" and launched a unified medical service platform, integrating multiple credit channels such as city credit, financial credit, and Alipay Sesame Credit, allowing patients to receive medical treatment before payment. The hospital also established a multifunctional integrated internet hospital on WeChat, making medical services smarter and more convenient. In 2021, the hospital successfully passed the National Smart Services Level 3 Assessment, becoming one of the first hospitals in the country and the first in the province to achieve this certification.
