Xiamen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Dongzhimen Hospital Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Xiamen Branch) was established in 1956. It is located in the geometric center of the scenic Xiamen Island. It is a tertiary grade comprehensive hospital with distinct TCM characteristics and outstanding comprehensive strength. In 2022, it was approved as a national regional medical center project. The hospital consists of the main hospital, the south area, and the Heixiangdong Outpatient Department. Its total construction area is 179,000 square meters, with 1,200 beds in the hospital and 1,300 beds available. In 2024, the hospital had 2.32 million outpatient and emergency visits and 61,500 hospitalizations. It was also approved as the emergency hospital of Xiamen City. 
The hospital received an A grade in the 2022 national performance assessment of public tertiary-level traditional Chinese medicine hospitals. It ranked 58th nationwide and first in Fujian Province. It is one of the three leading traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in Fujian Province that have been selected as a national pilot for establishing a modern hospital management system by the National Health Commission, and it is also a provincial-level civilized unit in Fujian Province. 
The hospital is the Eighth Clinical College of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, the Affiliated Xiamen Hospital of Fujian University of Chinese Medicine, a teaching hospital of Xiamen University, and a teaching hospital of Xiamen Medical University. It is a national drug clinical trial institution, a national postdoctoral research station, a national standardized training base for Chinese medicine resident physicians, a national standardized training base for general practitioners in the Chinese medicine category, and a training base for clinical pharmacists of traditional Chinese medicine of the Chinese Medical Association. 
Currently, there are 2 national-level key clinical specialties in the Department of Hepatology and Pediatrics, 1 national-level key discipline in Traditional Chinese Medicine for Liver and Gallbladder Diseases, 4 national-level key disciplines in Traditional Chinese Medicine for the specialties of Hepatology, Coloproctology, Surgery and Pediatrics, 4 national-level key disciplines in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 2 national-level key construction units in Traditional Chinese Medicine for the specialties of Orthopedics and Rheumatology. There are 5 projects for the construction of Fujian Province's "Double High" clinical key specialties (of Traditional Chinese Medicine) in the Department of Gastrointestinal Diseases, Rheumatology, Orthopedics, Diabetes, Acupuncture and Rehabilitation, Acupuncture and Rehabilitation for Hemorrhoids, Acupuncture and Rehabilitation for Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, Clinical Pharmacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine Nursing, Traditional Chinese Medicine Ophthalmology, Gynecology, Geriatrics, Breast Disease, Cardiovascular Disease, and Nephrology. The Department of Coloproctology, Acupuncture and Rehabilitation Pediatrics, Department of Hepatology and Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Department of Acupuncture and Rehabilitation of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Biliary Pancreatic Diseases, Department of Acupuncture and Rehabilitation of Bone and Joint Diseases, Acupuncture and Rehabilitation for Pediatrics, Acupuncture and Rehabilitation for Traditional Chinese Medicine Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, Clinical Pharmacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine Nursing, Traditional Chinese Medicine Ophthalmology, Gynecology, Geriatrics, Breast Disease, Cardiovascular Disease and Nephrology are 16 key specialties in Fujian Province. The Department of Coloproctology, Acupuncture and Rehabilitation Pediatrics and Department of Hepatology are the leading medical disciplines in Xiamen. 
There are currently 1,927 employees, 492 senior health professionals, 547 with master's or doctoral degrees, 3 experts enjoying the special government allowance, 16 doctoral supervisors, 93 master supervisors, 7 national mentors for the inheritance of old medical experts' academic experiences, 15 inheritors, 10 national talents in traditional Chinese medicine specialties. There are 7 famous traditional Chinese medicine experts in Fujian Province, 18 mentors for the inheritance of old medical experts' academic experiences in Fujian Province, and 38 inheritors. Six national-level studios for famous traditional Chinese medicine experts have been established, 2 provincial-level studios, 6 municipal-level studios, and a "Xiamen Kang's Hepatopathy Academic School Inheritance Studio" for the inheritance of the academic school of traditional Chinese medicine in Fujian Province. There is 1 director of a national-level academic society (the Traditional Chinese Medicine Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association), and 30 directors or above of national-level academic societies; 6 directors of provincial-level academic societies (Fujian Provincial Association of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Coloproctology, Fujian Provincial TCM Society for Pediatrics, Fujian Provincial TCM Society for Beauty, Fujian Provincial Association of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Cardiac Rehabilitation, Fujian Provincial TCM Society for Hepatopathy, Fujian Provincial TCM Society for Constitution Adjustment), and 33 directors or above of provincial-level academic societies. Through the platforms of academician work guidance, famous doctor studios, and the "dual director system", more than 20 top experts have been appointed, including Academician Chen Keji, Academician Chen Xiaoping, Academician Tian Jinzhou, Professor Gu Xiaohong, Director of the Key Research Laboratory of Heat Sensing Azone of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Professor Chen Rixin, etc. 
The institution has established the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine's Key Research Laboratory for Treating Infectious Diseases, three IV-level research institutes of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (in the fields of liver diseases, pediatrics, and traditional Chinese surgery), the Clinical Medical Research Center for Liver and Biliary Diseases of Xiamen, the Key Laboratory of Pelvic Dynamics, the Key Laboratory of Liver Diseases, the Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Preparation Research and Transformation, the Molecular Pathology Laboratory, etc. It also has an I-stage clinical trial research laboratory. There are 22 specialized departments (including traditional Chinese medicine for anorectal diseases, traditional Chinese medicine for bone injuries, traditional Chinese medicine for cardiovascular diseases, traditional Chinese medicine for cerebrovascular diseases, traditional Chinese medicine for liver diseases, traditional Chinese medicine for digestion, traditional Chinese medicine for gynecology, traditional Chinese medicine for pediatrics, traditional Chinese medicine for respiratory diseases, traditional Chinese medicine for rheumatism and immunity, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine for endocrinology, traditional Chinese medicine for kidney diseases, infectious disease department, oncology department, geriatrics department, orthopedics, liver and biliary surgery, urology, general surgery, breast surgery, ear-nose-throat department, anesthesia department) that have the qualifications for conducting clinical trials of drugs. 
In 2008, it became a national base for international exchanges and cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2022, it became a national base for traditional Chinese medicine services export. It has also held 90 overseas training courses on appropriate traditional Chinese medicine techniques, training a total of 3,500 people. It is an important window for the exchange and dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine to countries along the "Belt and Road Initiative".
