Located on the Java Island, Semarang is the capital of Central Java Province in Indonesia. It covers an area of more than 370 square kilometers and has a population of about 1.8 million. It is the third largest port in Indonesia and the most important port of Central Java Province. Nanjing and Semarang have a long history of profound exchanges. As early as over 600 years ago in the Ming Dynasty, the fleet of navigator Zheng He, which set sail from Nanjing, landed there and then the city was named after this navigator. In October 2016, Nanjing and Semarang established friendly cooperation ties. In October 2018, the two cities established sister-city relationship.During recent years, Nanjing has actively responded to the the Belt and Road Initiative and carried out extensive exchanges with Semarang in the fields of culture, tourism and personnel exchanges. Nanjing has sent cultural delegations to Semarang many times to carry out cultural exchange activities. Also, the Mayor of Semarang City and Chairman of the Sam Poh Tong Foundation led delegations to visit Nanjing upon invitation.
