: The Homecoming Journey of Dr. Zyro Wong, a Fourth-Generation Hainanese in Malaysia

Recently, at Insight (Season III), hosted by the Hainan International Media Center, Dr. Zyro Wong, President of The Knights Award and a fourth-generation Chinese of Hainanese descent from Malaysia, took the stage to deliver a heartfelt talk titled "Journey Back to My Hainanese Roots". A century after his great-grandfather left Hainan for Malaysia, Zyro returns to Wenchang with his 85-year-old grandmother to reconnect with lost relatives and rediscover the culture that shaped their roots. From exploring the historic arcades of Qilou Old Street to experiencing the traditional dyeing techniques of the Li ethnic group and enjoying tea in nostalgic old-style teahouses, his journey was a powerful act of both rediscovery and reconnection. Dr. Wong not only shared his deep personal connection with Hainan but also, drawing from his own direct experience, presented a vivid picture of the island's transformation. He experienced firsthand the blending of tradition and modernity, as well as the convergence of openness and opportunity, in the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port.
