Chengdu 2026.07.03 - 2026.07.03"Absolutely spectacular! I never expected such a wonderful performance right on my doorstep. It felt so immersive," exclaimed Mr. Liu, a visitor who watched the large-scale water-surface live-action show Encounter the Three Kingdoms: The Blazing Red Cliffs in Luodai Ancient Town, Longquanyi District, on the evening of June 25.
It is understood that this large-scale water-surface live-action show is set against the backdrop of the Battle of Red Cliffs during the Three Kingdoms period. The June 25 performance was a trial run, and the show is expected to officially premiere on the evening of July 3 at the "Encounter the Three Kingdoms Theater" in Luodai Ancient Town. As Chengdu's first large-scale water-surface live-action show, it will further enrich visitors' immersive night-tour experience.

Encounter the Three Kingdoms: The Blazing Red Cliffs runs for approximately 60 minutes. It opens with a monologue by Liu Shan and unfolds in eight chronological acts: "New Recruits at the Bronze Sparrow Terrace," "Endless Conscription," "The Sun-Liu Alliance," "The Stratagem of Self-Harm," "Borrowing the East Wind," "The Blazing Red Cliffs," "The Homeward Journey," and "A Solitary Shadow in an Age of Prosperity." In terms of the viewing experience, the show strives to break away from the traditional model of "performing onstage while watching from the audience," with the seating area designed as an integral part of the performance space.
Why bring a Three Kingdoms story to Luodai Ancient Town? According to the organizers, Luodai Ancient Town dates back to the Qin and Han dynasties and thrived as a market town during the Three Kingdoms period, with legendary tales such as "Liu Shan Lost His Belt," "Zhuge Liang Established the Market," and "Zhao Yun Tamed the Dragon" passed down through the ages. The venue for this live-action show has been meticulously chosen, situated on Yuanyang Lake between the town's two landmark structures, the Five-Phoenix Towers and Boke Tower. The Five-Phoenix Towers carry the legend of Lady Gan from the Three Kingdoms, while Boke Tower is the only Hakka Tulou museum in Southwest China. These two landmarks embrace the lake, creating a naturally magnificent stage where "water reflects flames, and antiquity illuminates the present."
Leveraging comprehensive digital control technology, the show integrates 3D laser projection, a 300-square-meter realistic sea of flames, giant water curtains, and panoramic sound effects to recreate on the open water the breathtaking spectacle of "Red Cliffs in flames, fire lighting up the river."
