The First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University was established in August 1937. Its predecessor was "Fujian Provincial Hospital" founded by patriotic Chinese citizen Hu Wenhu, who donated funds. It is located at the foot of Hongshan Mountain on the beautiful Lü Island, in the city center. Starting with 50 beds and 87 staff members, it has been practicing medicine and saving lives since its establishment, and has walked steadily for 88 years. Besides the main hospital, it also has 6 branch hospitals, 1 internet hospital, and 1 nursing home. It is the largest tertiary grade comprehensive hospital in Fujian and southwestern regions, integrating medical care, teaching, research, prevention, and rehabilitation. 
As a pilot hospital for high-quality development of public hospitals in Fujian Province, this hospital seized the opportunity for high-quality development, aiming to build a high-level hospital. Through continuous strengthening of discipline construction, optimizing the treatment process, improving medical quality, and enhancing information support, it has ranked among the first echelon of high-level tertiary general hospitals in Fujian Province. It is the first large-scale comprehensive hospital in China to successfully obtain both "HIMSS EMRAM inpatient and outpatient 7-level certifications" and international JCI academic medical center accreditation. It has been rated as an A+ level in the national performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals for five consecutive years (among the top 2-3% of national tertiary public hospitals), entering the top 100 nationwide and maintaining a stable ranking at the top of the city. It has been ranked among the top 100 in the "China Hospital Competitiveness - Top 100 Hospitals List" for seven consecutive years, ranking 81st, achieving the earliest breakthrough of zero in the national top 100 list of hospitals in Xiamen, and continuing to lead in the southwestern Fujian region. At the same time, it ranked 6th in the national HIC 100 list of smart hospitals and is the first hospital in the province to "pass both national informatization construction standards" (with "five-level B standard" for national interconnection standardization maturity and "six-level hospital" for electronic medical record system function application level evaluation). In 2020, it successfully passed the five-star hospital certification of China Hospital Competitiveness and became the first smart hospital in China to reach HIC 7 level. In 2023, it was awarded the title of the Sixth Xiamen Quality Award, and its outstanding management model was fully affirmed by the government, becoming a benchmark and exemplary model for quality management in the city. It ranked 29th in the "2024 Internet Hospital 100 List" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ranking first among medical institutions in the province. 
The hospital currently has 2,500 beds in its establishment, and it has 67 clinical and medical technology departments. It has 4 national key specialized project constructions (the first in the city), 4 national clinical medical research centers' sub-centers in Fujian Province (the first in the city), 3 Fujian Province clinical medical research centers (the first in the city), 25 Fujian Province clinical key project constructions (the first in the city), 3 Xiamen University Medical College departments (the first in the city), 4 Xiamen City clinical medical centers (the first in the city), 2 Xiamen City cutting-edge specialty project constructions (the first in the city), 5 Xiamen City medical leading discipline project constructions (the first in the city), 4 Xiamen City medical centers (the first in the city), 9 Xiamen City clinical key specialty constructions, 3 Xiamen City medical advantage sub-specialty constructions, 10 Xiamen City medical planning specialty constructions (the first in the city), 18 municipal quality control centers (the first in the city), and 7 municipal specialized disease prevention and treatment centers (the first in the city). In the 2023 ranking of China's Top 100 Hospitals for Innovation and Transformation, our hospital ranked 18th and was awarded the four-star institution title, being the only medical institution from Fujian Province on the list. In the 2023 ranking of China's Hospitals' Disciplines STEM, our hospital had 10 disciplines enter the top 100 list, and as of now, there are a total of 16 disciplines in the top 100 list; in the China Medical University Science and Technology Value (STEM) and the 2019-2023 Total Science and Technology Value (ASTEM) of medical schools, our hospital had 9 disciplines enter the top 100 list; the number of disciplines entering the list ranked third in Fujian Province and first in Xiamen City. In the 2023 Fudan Hospital Specialty Reputation Ranking, 5 disciplines were nominated, and the number of nominations ranked first in Xiamen City. In 2019, the Municipal Health Commission entrusted a third-party organization to evaluate all hospitals in the city. The First Hospital ranked first in terms of comprehensive strength in the city, and ranked first in 6 dimensions including medical technology and quality safety. 
The hospital currently has 4,176 employees, among whom 1,277 are Communist Party members, 576 are senior professionals, 884 are associate senior professionals, 2,994 are mid-to-senior-level professionals, 388 are doctoral candidates, 861 are master's degree holders, 36 are doctoral supervisors, 332 are master's supervisors, and 21 are experts enjoying special government allowances. The advanced equipment includes: 1 tomotherapy system (TOMO) (the first in Fujian Southwest), 1 PET-MR (the first in Fujian Southwest), 1 PET-CT (GE Discovery MI) (the second most advanced model installed globally), 1 da Vinci surgical robot (IS3000) (the first in Fujian Southwest), 1 breast CT (Koning) (the first in Fujian), 1 femtosecond laser corneal refractive treatment instrument (Carl Zeiss) (the first in the southern region), 8 CT machines, 6 magnetic resonance machines, 6 DSA machines, 2 ECT machines, 3 Varian linear accelerators, and a surgical navigation system. 
The hospital has established 35 provincial and municipal research platforms, among which 6 are provincial-level platforms (all three of the Fujian Province Clinical Medicine Research Centers have been recognized as the Fujian Branch Centers of the National Clinical Medicine Research Centers), 23 municipal research platforms have been approved, 6 research institutes at the level of the university of Xiamen. It has been approved to establish the only cell therapy research center in Xiamen, the first clinical medicine research institute in the city, and has been approved to establish the first provincial and municipal clinical medicine research centers and has the highest number of approvals among all medical institutions in Xiamen. The postdoctoral workstation of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University has trained over 100 postdoctoral researchers since its establishment in 2006, among whom 72 have graduated and 30 are currently on the post. It has been rated as an "Excellent National Postdoctoral Research Station" for two consecutive years in 2015 and 2020. In April 2024, it received approval from the National Postdoctoral Management Office and obtained the qualification to independently recruit postdoctoral researchers. It has been registered with 23 drug clinical trial specialties, 37 medical device clinical trial specialties, and 5 special medical formula food specialties by the National Bureau. Currently, it has received 1473 provincial, municipal, and national research projects, including 217 national natural science foundation projects, 1 national social science foundation project, and the total number of National Science Foundation projects ranks first in the medical system of Xiamen. In 2024, the number of National Science Foundation projects reached more than half of the health system in Xiamen, and the academic influence has been continuously increasing. "The Demonstration Platform for Clinical Evaluation of Anti-tumor New Drugs" has been approved for the National Science and Technology Major Project, which is the first national science and technology major project obtained by a medical institution in Fujian Province. It has been ranked in the top 40 of the national GCP institution drug clinical trial volume value ranking list for general hospitals for three consecutive years and ranks first in Fujian Province. The number of generic drug consistency evaluation projects approved nationwide ranks tenth. It has received 92 various scientific and technological awards at all levels, including 2 municipal science and technology major contribution awards, 9 municipal science and technology progress first prizes, and 5 municipal scientific and technological innovation outstanding talent awards. Since 2020, the number of SCI papers has exceeded 200 each year, and the highest single article impact factor is 87.244. 
As an affiliated hospital of Xiamen University, the hospital undertakes the teaching tasks for undergraduate and postgraduate students (including master's and doctoral students) of Xiamen University, Xiamen Medical College, Fujian Medical University, Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and other medical colleges. Currently, there are over 300 undergraduate students, 400 postgraduate students and 50 trainees in the hospital. There are 25 clinical teaching and research departments including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, emergency medicine and nursing. There are over 840 clinical teachers. There are currently 20 national-level resident physician standardized training bases and 1 general surgery specialist physician standardized training base. There are 320 resident physicians undergoing standardized training (excluding professional master's students). There is a clinical teaching skills training center, including 15 functional training areas. The hospital is the sole examination site for the theoretical examination of specialized physicians for training in Fujian Province in Xiamen region. It has continuously undertaken the examination and management work of the comprehensive assessment for graduates of the training bases for resident physicians in surgery in Fujian Province for 10 consecutive years.
