The 2025 Chinese Bridge cultural exchange program for Norwegian students kicked off today at Soochow University in Suzhou. Thirteen participants from the University of Bergen and two high schools will embark on a 14-day immersive trip into Chinese language and culture.

During the opening ceremony, Xia Jun, dean of School of Overseas Education at Soochow University, and Zhu Lvhua, deputy director of the university's International Office, delivered welcome speeches, giving a warm reception to the visiting students. Victoria Ann Mathisen, Norwegian representative of the Chinese Bridge program, and Synnøve Haugen, leader of the student group, shared their excitement and expectations for the exchange.

Victoria Ann Mathisen (R) and Synnøve Haugen share their expectations.

"I believe this program will not only be enjoyable but also allow me to feel the local culture, history, arts, and daily life in an immersive way," said Haugen. The program combines classroom studies with hands-on activities and includes Chinese language classes, cultural experiences, youth exchanges, and city tours, aiming to build a bridge for Norwegian youth to understand China and gain a deeper appreciation of the Chinese language and local traditions.

Students are given an introduction to Soochow University at the university's museum.

"I can't wait to see what's waiting for us. Soochow University has prepared a lot of programs. It's a really good schedule for us, so we can experience the most we can," Eliina, who just graduated from high school, could hardly hide her excitement.

Their journey in Suzhou will last through July 5. In addition to intensive Chinese courses, the students will learn Chinese calligraphy, try various local handicrafts, and visit such landmarks as the Suzhou Museum, the Humble Administrator's Garden, and Pingjiang Road. They will even spend a day with local families to experience daily life in the ancient water city.

Students finish a memorable tour around the century-old Soochow University."I haven't seen much of Suzhou and I don't know much about the city. But I have seen some photos and I want to fully explore it in the next few days. I have quite expectations for it," said Olav, a student at Amalie Skram Secondary School.
