Savor osmanthus flowers, the scent of autumn

The florescence of osmanthus flowers this year has been delayed due to the high temperatures and the diminished rainfall in the past few days. Until the eve of the National Day, the temperature difference between day and night in Hangzhou gradually widened, which successfully awakens the osmanthus fragrans from the dormant state, and we won’t miss the scenery of “with the falling osmanthus flowers blown off by the  wind, the deep sense of autumn finally sets in”. In the next 20 days, the entire Hangzhou City will be immersed in the rich osmanthus fragrance. Residents and visitors who like to enjoy flower-viewing are encouraged to seize this opportunity.

As a great place for enjoying osmanthus flowers in Hangzhou, Manjuelong has been home to the densest osmanthus in Hangzhou since the Ming Dynasty. There are more than 7,000 osmanthus trees planted lining the mountain roads along with many cafes where people can savor the flowers while enjoying a cup of coffee.

Hangzhou Botanical Garden is also an excellent place to enjoy osmanthus fragrans, in which the osmanthus flowers are not only numerous in variety but also in grand scale. In addition to enjoying the osmanthus fragrans, citizens and tourists can also admire huge ornamental carps, bamboo groves and other display of flowers.

Hangzhou’s major temples are highly recommended for osmanthus viewing. There is a century-old osmanthus tree in Fajing Temple. Accompanied by the yellow walls and red lanterns in the ancient temple, citizens and tourists can feel the Zen combined with the refreshing fragrance of the osmanthus flowers.

However, the typhoon “Krathon” may bring strong winds, cooler temperatures and rain to Hangzhou during the National Day holiday. With rain hitting osmanthus flowers, the late autumn in Hangzhou may have a different flavor. After the typhoon, the roads in Hangzhou will be carpeted with a layer of fallen osmanthus flowers, creating “golden roads” across the city.
