Experiencing the Warmth of Chinese New Year in Changsha

During the 2026 Spring Festival in Changsha, I, Eugene Ansah Owusu Ampaw, found myself swept up in the city's festive magic. Walking along the 湘江 (Xingjian River) at dusk, I watched fireworks explode over the water, their golden sparks reflecting the promise of the Year of the Horse.

A kind elderly couple, noticing me watching alone, handed me a steaming basket of tangyuan (sweet rice balls) and said, "Eat these, young man they'll make your year as sweet and 圆满 (complete) as our circle.
In that moment, thousands of miles from home, I felt the true warmth of Chinese New Year: not just in the lanterns or the celebrations, but in the spontaneous kindness that turns strangers into family.
